  • Progress continues for nuclear plants in Levy County

    BRONSON --- On March 11, Progress Energy Florida (PEF) asked the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to allow two nuclear units in Levy County.

    That same evening, PEF addressed the Levy Commission in regard to the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Objections, Recommendations and Concerns (ORC). The county wants to amend the Levy County Comprehensive Plan and land use map, including a zoning change from Forestry/Rural Residential to Public Use for the 3,100-acre PEF nuclear site.

  • Chiefland wants water bottling plant

    Chiefland leaders heard March 10 about a proposed water-bottling plant that wants to tap 300,000 gallons of city water daily.

    About 100,000 gallons of sewer service will be required daily to process the drinking water, Building and Zoning Administrator Bill Hammond Jr. said. Ninety-nine percent of that, he added, will go back to the aquifer.

    "It's actually potable water when they get done with it," Hammond said. "That discharge to our sewer would just be like the normal bathroom use of any other business."

  • Bronson Speedway opens 2008 stock car racing season

    The folks at Bronson Motor Speedway were all revved up about opening night last week.

    Then came a cold and blustery day Saturday. So much for a warm, balmy opening night.

    At least the wind died down by sunset, and most of the fans came well-prepared –with jackets, blankets, gloves, the whole nine yards.

    Early Sunday morning, there was frost in the Levy County area.

    While the weather did hold down the crowd some, track officials were pleased by the car count and attendence.

  • Pitts leads Indian rout of P.K.

    The Chiefland High varsity baseball is a team on a mission –first place in district or bust.

    The Indians continued to impress in the early season, whipping host P.K. Yonge, 10-0, on Wednesday, March 5.

    Chiefland stayed unbeaten in Class 3A District 5 play, stretching the record to 5-0. Overall, the Indians are 7-1.

    Yonge is considered one of the top teams in the district. The Indians certainly had no trouble with the Blue Wave on a warm Wednesday evening.

  • Track and field new sport at CMS

    For the first time ever, Chiefland Middle School will be fielding a track and field team.

    The interest has been great with more than 50 kids joining the team.

    Finding the best events for them to compete in became the duty of co-coaches Wendell Corbin and Debra Weeks. Corbin is a veteran track coach who also coaches the sport at Chiefland High. Weeks is a sixth grade science teacher at CMS.

  • CHS track and field has 2 winners at Crystal River

    The Chiefland High boys and girls track teams were rained out of their home meet scheduled for last Friday, March 7, at Chiefland Elementary.

    They did make it to Crystal River for a meet on Friday, Feb. 29.

    The Chiefland boys had two winners. Genesis Cilo-Cilo won the 200 meters in 23.7 seconds. Zach Tyson captured the 300 hurdles in 42.7.

    Cilo-Cilo was second in the 100 meters with a clocking of 11.4.

    Delmar Dial had a couple of third-place finishes. He was third in the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 7 inches. He was third in the discus at 105-0.

    JV baseball off to great start

    Despite losing its first game of the season at P.K. Yonge on Wednesday, March 5, the Chiefland High junior varsity baseball team is putting together a pretty impressive season.

    The 9-3 loss to P.K. dropped the Indian JVs record to 7-1-1.

    The pitching has been strin with Jacob Reidy, Bo Beauchamp and Marquis Green turning in impressive performances on the hill.

    Green also plays left field and is the team's leadoff hitter. He has hit a home run this year.

  • Ex-Lady Indian Mills playing college softball

    The 2007 Chiefland High softball team had quite a few standout players in a memorable season that saw the Lady Indians make it to the state "Final Four."

    One of them was catcher Whitney Mills, who excelled offensively and defensively.

    At first, Mills was content to call it a career and concentrate on her studies at Santa Fe Community College. But with a little urging from Lady Saints coach Ahern, Mills decided to go out for the team.

    Not only did she make the squad, but coach gave her a scholarship.

  • Student sweat out FCAT weeks

    Parents, be extra nice to your kids this week and next. Buy them an ice cream or their favorite candy bar. Little Johnny or Mary is apt to be feeling the pressure of relentless FCAT testing.

    Yes, the much ballyhooed Florida Comprehesive Assessment Test is being given statewide to students in grades 3-11.

    The annual tests, which mirror the Sunshine State Stardards, gauge how students measure up against others from across the state in three critical areas –language arts, mathematics and science.

  • Road crew fixes problem from clay pocket

    BRONSON - They build, repair and maintain roads in Levy County.

    This team of 67 men and women make up the Levy County Road Department and they make sure the highways and byways allow people to traverse them.

    Watching work at one site for a couple of hours on March 5 provided an opportunity to see one aspect of the work they do.
