  • Hiers, Wheeler excel for Indian track and field

    The athletic field at Chiefland Elementary was alive with many athletic events last Thursday, March 20, as Chiefland High was host to an invitational track and field meet.

    Six schools competed in the girls competition, while there were five in the boys.

    Cedar Key High won the girls meet with 139 team points. Bell was secon at 119, Trenton third at 86, Williston fourth at 50, Chiefland fifth at 49 and Dixie County sixth at 47.

  • Chiefland bench presses Bell, Bronson

    The Chiefland High boys weightlifting team remained unbeaten with victories over visiting Bell and Bronson on Wednesday, March 19.

    Chiefland scored 50 team points compared to Bell's 43 and Bronson's 16.

    Chiefland had winners in five of the 10 weight divisions.

    Randy Hite won at 119 pounds. He benched 140 and cleaned 175 for a total of 315.

    Jacob Merritt won at 129 pounds. He benched 230 and cleaned 175 for a total of 405.

    Stephen Davis won at 169 pounds. He benched 245 and cleaned 225 for a total of 470.

  • 11-run inning powers Indians

    The big inning can turn around things in a hurry.

    For example, take the Chiefland High baseball team's March 18 game against visiting Newberry.

    For three innings, young Panther lefthander Tay Ross shut down the potent Indian attack as Newberry built a three-run lead.

    That was all wiped in a nightmarish fourth for Ross, as Chiefland rallied for 11 runs.

    The big frame paved the way to a 13-3 Indian victory over the Panthers.

    Chiefland improved to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in Class 3A District 11.

  • Devils rally past Indians

    WILLISTON –After the start of a game which seemingly saw Chiefland?s baseball team in full control, the Indians suddenly find themselves in a position where a coin toss might determine the top seed in the district.

    Williston rallied from a four-run deficit to defeat Chiefland, 11-5, last Thursday night, March 20.

    The result leaves each team with one district loss as they have split their district season series. If both teams win out and finish tied, the various tiebreakers would still find the teams tied, and a coin toss will decide the top seed.

  • Indians rebound by squashing Bronson

    The Chiefland High baseball team didn't have much time to mope about the previous night's (March 20) disaster at Williston.

    The Indians had to get right back after it the next night (March 21), as they played host to Bronson.

    There was blowing a lead this time, as Chiefland cruised to a 14-2 non-district victory.

    The game only went five innings because of the mercy rule.

    Chiefland (10-2) had single tallies in the first and second innings and then blew it open with a six-run third frame.

  • Hoop teams look to better '08-'09

    Neither the boys or girls basketball teams at Chiefland High posted winning seasons in 2007-08, but both used them as building blocks towards future success.

    Both teams reminisced at the banquet held Monday, March 17, in the school cafeteria.

    The boys were 8-17 in Mark Lundy?s first year as head coach. Lundy is hoping the foundation is laid for a much better 2008-09.

    Lundy looked back at the 2007-08 season as an exciting one.

    He only had two seniors in Delmar Dial and Casey Brown. Dial grabbed one of the individual awards –the Rebound Award.

  • Parity rules at Bronson Motor Speedway

    BRONSON –One of these weeks, there's going to be a repeat winner at Bronson Motor Speedway.

    But after the first three weeks of Saturday night racing at the high-banked 1/3-mile asphalt track, parity has been the rule.

    Not one car hads revisted victory lane in any of the three car divisions.

    In the Sportsman 30-lap feature, no one really had anything for race winner Matt Blum, the High Springs driver who pilots the 1 car.

    Blum passed polesitter Jim Higginbotham in the 76 car on a restart on lap 6. From there, Blum was never seriously threatened.

  • Fire chief wants full-time personnel

    Fire Chief John Ward found the Chiefland City Commission unanimously approving some of his requests for grant applications, while the commission held back on one.

    A Florida Division of Forestry grant for a 50-50 match was approved March 24. Ward said these funds are for less expensive items for the department.

  • 14 busted in Chiefland drug raid

    Busted!

    This is probably among the words flying through the air as suspected drug buyers and sellers called each other on their cell phones shortly after 2 p.m. on Saturday.

    That's when a set of drug raids started. Officers netted 14 people who are suspected of having committed 38 felonies and four misdemeanors on March 22, according to records.
