    The brainstorm of locals Ryan Bell and Chris DeVeau and out-of-towners Ziad Kazbour and Dave Midgett, BubbaQue's offers exquisite ribs, pulled pork, chicken, wings and other Southern goodies, but the "It's the Pits' redneck theme is refreshing, relaxed and just plain fun.

    Owning several Hungry Howie's in the area, Bell has been locked into the franchise train of thought.

  • Reps will listen to your concern

    Representatives for Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite (FL-05) will continue the practice of hosting Constituent Outreach Meetings throughout the 5th District in the coming weeks to meet with residents of the area to discuss their views and concerns.

    Staff members from Rep. Brown-Waite's office will explain how to get in touch with the Congresswoman to remedy a problem, offer general assistance and information, and outline what services are available through the office.

  • Power bills going up

    Skyrocketing gasoline prices continue to be much more far-reaching than what you literally pay at the pump.

    After holding off for as long as possible, Central Florida Electric Cooperative finally had to pass some of the load to its 30,000 customers in the tri-county area.

  • Sheriff's Reports

    The Levy County Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. was called to Chiefland June 16 following an incident that left a home blasted with gunfire.

    Lloyd Aaron Roosa, 37, of N.W. 90th St., was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest without violence after he allegedly shot up the home of his girlfriend.

    According to the sheriff's office, the girlfriend told officers that Roosa had visited bars in Fanning Springs and upon returning home, retrieved a .22 caliber rifle from the bedroom and shot at her.

  • Drought hurting crops

    From beneath the shelter of his farmhouse's front porch, Brad Lingo smiled at the sheets of rain falling fast from his roof. The curly hairs of his beard seemed to draw tighter to his face, and though his glasses were beginning to fog, his eyes revealed the feeling that accompanies seeing a long-lost friend.

    "This doesn't solve our drought problem," he said.

  • Cedar Key bridges need work

    Jordan Green out of the Florida Department of Transportation office in Lake City made his annual visit to the Levy County Commissioners to talk about upcoming road projects.

    "We're soliciting work order priorities," said Green, whose office coordinates work in 11 counties.

    The biggest county road project in the DOT's tentative five-year plan is the bridge replacement spanning the Waccasassa River on CR 339.

    Commissioner Lily Rooks, District 4, suggested that two bridges on Cedar Key seem to need immediate attention.

  • Aerial photography no longer free

    Seems things that were once free are disappearing quickly.

    No more free air or water at the filling station. No more free luggage bags on airlines.

    For Levy County Property Appraiser Francis Akins, it's no more free aerial photography.

    A shocked Akins revealed to County Commissioners Tuesday that the Florida Department of Revenue has suddenly decided to bill counties with populations more than 25,000 for the aerial shots that are vital to appraisers, realtors, insurers and bankers.

    We're not talking petty cash, either.

  • Bo Diddley remembered

    Levy County Commissioner Tony Parker has always believed Bo Diddley never got enough recognition in his home county.

    The rock 'n roll music pioneer died at the age of 79 on June 2.

    "He was well known around the world," Parker said. "He was bigger in a lot of places than here."

    Here would be Levy County.

    "His mailing address was Archer, but he really lived in Levy," Parker said.

  • The legend of Okeeheelee

    The name Okeeheelee has a ring like some of those other small, rural towns in Florida.

    Like Okeechobee, or Yeehaw Junction, Immokalee, or Homosassa.

    But Okeeheelee is not a town by itself. Actually, it's a part of West Palm Beach -Okeeheelee Park.

    Each year, the Okeeheelee Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Baseball organization sends a team or two to Chiefland for the State Tee Ball Tournament.

    Even though Okeeheelee didn't win it this year, looking back over the list of tourney winners, the little O has flat-out dominated through the years.
