  • BOCC seeks grant for clammers

    The Levy County Commission has approved seeking a $121,000 federal stimulus grant to benefit the clammers and oystermen at Cedar Key.

    Commissioner Lilly Rooks brought up the non-agenda item at the Commission meeting on Tuesday morning and the commissioners immediately agreed to take up the matter.

    Rooks said she had received a letter from the Levy County Soil and Water Conservation Board the afternoon before saying the money is available and the grant application must be submitted by April 6.

  • Bar donnybrook ends with one man arrested

    Officer Nick Viaggio who recently came off light duty for the Chiefland Police Department probably wished he had not when confronted with a crowd of about 200 men in their 20s and 30s fighting with everything from beer mugs to barstools at Knucklehead’z Bar.

    Viaggio was the first officer to respond to the call at 1:19 a.m. Saturday at 909 South Main Street, said Chiefland Police Chief Robert Douglas in a verbal report to the City Commission Monday night. “You could call it a riot-fight,” Douglas said.

  • Six trophies, no winners in horse show cuts

    The horse show at the Suwannee River Fair was smaller this year. About 60 percent smaller. Show devotees who showed up past noon to check out the speed events would have been greeted by an empty arena and a small crowd, drifting away. There was no speed competition this year, and only nine girls competed in the other events, although more than 30 had entered.

    It is just awful with what the executives of AIG are getting away with! They are squandering some 160 - 200 million of our tax dollars to give bonuses! Well I am not going to condemn or excuse the executives of AIG. What they are doing appears shameful but I only have the information provided by the news media.

  • Chiefland girls can't overcome Williston in rematch

    For five innings the softball game played Friday evening between the Chiefland Indians and the Williston Red Devils was all it had been built up to be. After all, both teams were locked up in a three-way tie for the district lead with P.K. Yonge after the Red Devils had beaten Chiefland earlier in the season, P.K. Yonge beat Williston, and the Indians beat the Blue Wave in the first round of district games.

    Williston took a 1-0 first-inning lead, but Chiefland loaded the bases in the top of the second. Amy Biehl drilled a three-run triple to put the Indians on top 3-1.

  • Lady Indians back on track with win over Dixie

    After an ugly 5-4 collapse at Trenton, Chiefland girls got serious again and whipped up on Dixie County in a 7-0 district shutout win at home. With the win, the Lady Indians are 8-3, and 6-2 in the district.

    Chiefland's Amber Richardson pitched a complete game against Dixie County, striking out nine batters and allowing only four hits. As in their season opener at the Lady Bears' den, Chiefland's defense had no errors.

  • Diamond tribe looks ahead after setback

    After a good run of wins, Chiefland baseball was sorely tested last week by a bad home loss to Taylor County and a 12-2 district loss at Ft. White.

    “We got beat up pretty good up there – ten-runned again,” said Indians' Head Coach Kyle Parnell.

    “Basically they hit the ball and we didn't. They swung the bats well; we hit the ball hard but seemed to hit it right at them. Only about two strikeouts, but whenever we put the ball in play, they just made the plays – give Ft. White the credit.”
