      Despite a relatively new Board of County Commissioners and promises to do away with the "old way" of doing things, it appears to be politics as usual in Levy County.

  • Showing their true colors

    The BOCC showed their true colors June 21 when Commissioner Ryan Bell pulled a last minute, non-agenda item for the removal of Toni Collins from the Planning Commission. It was interesting how two commissioners, Chad Johnson and Danny Stevens, felt that it was Bell's district so he should be able to remove and replace as was his desire.

  • Fuller named All-American

    Postseason recognition is rolling in for Chiefland High catcher and Florida Gators pledge Taylore Fuller.

    The junior was named to Louisville Slugger's All-American team today by the National Fast Pitch Coach Association. She also was named to the All-Region first team by the NFCA and was first team All-State selection by the Florida Athletic Coaches' Association.

  • Jarret Johnson, former Gators, 'Noles headline camp

    Baltimore Ravens starting linebacker Jarret Johnson will be joined by several former college players when he returns to his high school for the Suwannee All-Skillz Camp on July 9 at Chiefland High School.

  • Burn ban lifted

    The rains have fallen and so has the mandatory burn ban in unincorporated areas of Levy County.

    The ban and the local declaration of an emergency due to the continuing drought was lifted Wednesday.

    The action was taken by the Levy County Board of Commissioners in conjunction with the state Department of Forestry.

    The ban was instituted due to the threat of wildfires on June 14.

    This means fireworks can be sold and exploded on the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

  • Road and Lane Closures for June 25 – July 1, 2011

    The following is a list of roadwork underway by the FDOT that may impact traffic.
     
    ALACHUA COUNTY:
     
    Archer Road (State Road 24)  Daytime lane closure for eastbound traffic at Southwest 40th Boulevard (just east of I-75) to allow Gainesville Regional Utilities to relocate a water line. Also, a westbound lane will be closed just west of Southwest 13th Street (US 441) to repair sidewalk.

  • Bus, drug incidents drive school board meeting

    Personnel issues involving two bus drivers and a custodian consumed Tuesday's three-plus hour School Board of Levy County meeting.
    The board also called an Aug. 2 public hearing to discuss policy changes, including the adoption of the "baggy pants law," recently approved by Florida legislators.
