  • Dixie County child killed in hunting incident

    An Old Town child was killed in a hunting incident Nov. 8 on private land near Old Town in Dixie County.
    Bryan Austen Osteen (DOB 07/26/99) was deer hunting at the Crane Bay Hunting Club, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators.
    Osteen was hunting from an 11-foot ladder stand and was using an H&R single-shot, 20-gauge shotgun.  At approximately 5:15 p.m., Osteen suffered a fatal shot to the chest when he was apparently attempting to climb down off the stand.

    n Nov. 13, Chastity Nicole Baxman, 30, Otter Creek, out of county warrant.
    n Nov. 13, Tabatha Ann Beals, 24, Old Town, possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, drug equipment. Bond $26,000.

    n Oct. 27, Kenneth Eugene Brown, 42, Chiefland, possession four grams to under 30 kilograms. Bond $25,000.
    n Oct. 29, Terry Leon Byrd, 49, Immokalee, DWLSR. Bond $1,500.

  • Lawmaker promotes early release for inmates

    Clearing Florida's bulging prison population is the topic of the state House Criminal Justice Subcommittee. The debate is about HB177, a bill to provide early release for non-violent drug offenders who are currently clogging prisons and crimping the state's budget. Rep. Ari Porth (D-Coral Springs) introduced it.
    "In the language in the bill, you have to serve 50 percent of your sentence before being reconsidered for re-entry."

  • Williston man arrested in jury tampering

    A Williston man who tried to persuade a juror to vote not guilty for his friend on trial for drug charges is now sitting in the Levy County jail under a $250,000 bond.
    Robert Earl Patterson, 38, was arrested on Oct. 27 and charged with tampering with a juror after the juror told deputies Patterson came to her home and left his cell phone number for her to call. When the juror's mother called the phone number Patterson asked that the juror vote not guilty in the trial of Hermie McClendon and offered to buy her dinner and pay her.

    n Oct. 14, Kathryn Jane Shroka, 25, two out of county warrants. Bond $12,000.
