    BRONSON - A 39-year-old Williston man was arrested for felonious child abuse on Dec. 22.

    The victim and witness said Terence Bartges had been drinking most of the night before the deputy arrived at about 11:25 p.m., according to records.

  • Levy deputies stop fugitive with spike sticks

    BRONSON – Levy County Sheriff's Office deputies ended a 31-minute pursuit that started in Marion County on Dec. 21 just before 10 p.m., LCSO Lt. Evan Sullivan said.

    Larry Ray Griffis, 39 was arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and driving while license suspended or revoked, Sullivan said.

  • Purse-snatcher hurts Chiefland woman

    A 55-year-old Chiefland woman was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries after a purse-snatcher pushed her down just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, Chiefland Police Officer Nick Viaggio said.

    CPD Officer Alton Horne and Viaggio responded to Huddle House, where the victim went immediately after the attack. The victim had just exited the Dollar General Store at 1302 N. Young Blvd. (U.S. Highway 19) when the attacker came from behind bushes on the south side of the property, Viaggio said.

  • Sheriff Reports

    A 50-year-old Morriston man was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on Dec. 18 after he allegedly pointed a pistol at a victim, according to Levy County Sheriff's Office records.

    Jorge L. Sanchez had been arguing with the victim. Sanchez pointed the gun at the victim, who defended himself and took the gun away from the attacker, according to records.

    The victim escaped with the weapon, which was retrieved by the LCSO, according to records.

    Bond was set for Sanchez at $10,000.

  • CPD adds new officer

    Replacing former Chiefland Police Department officer Calvin Hardge effective Dec. 20, a member of the Chiefland High School class of 1991 joins the CPD.

    Al Horne, 35, has been working for the past year as a correctional officer with the Levy County Sheriff's Office. He was born in Chiefland and has lived here his whole life.

    Before serving at the Levy County Jail, Horne was a welder for many years, he said.

    CPD Chief Robert Douglas is very happy with the new addition to the force.

  • Predator registers

    On Dec. 5 Arthur Pope Matheny registered with the Levy County Sheriff's Office as a sexual predator. He previously was a transient in Marion County. He resides at 21930 S.E. 66 St., Morriston.

    Matheny was convicted in Marion County Dec. 10, 1996 for a lewd and lascivious act on a child less than 16 years of age and failed to register as a sexual predator on Sept. 20, 2005 in Marion County.

  • Sex crime charge dropped against alleged bank robber

    BRONSON - A charge of attempted sexual battery was dropped against a 23-year-old Newberry man who remains in jail accused of robbing a bank, according to records.

    Joshua Kane O'Hara was arrested Nov. 9 for attempted sexual battery when he surrendered himself to authorities at the Levy County Sheriff's Office in Bronson, according to records.

    LCSO spokesman Lt. Evan Sullivan said the attempted rape charge was dropped due to a lack of cooperation from the alleged victim.

  • November felony convictions listed

    BRONSON - The following people were convicted of felonies in Levy County Circuit Court during the month of November.

    These names have been provided to the Levy County Supervisor of Elections. Convicted felons are not allowed to vote in Florida or to possess a firearm until their civil rights are restored for those purposes.

    * Michael P. Alumbaugh, 46, of Bronson, possession of marijuana, producing marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver.

    * Adam Bergdoll, 19, of Hernando, larceny.

  • Boy busted for bringing guns to school

    BRONSON - John H. Peyregne, 17, of Cedar Key was arrested Nov. 26 for possession of a firearm on school grounds. Cedar Key Chief Bubba Castell contacted School Resource Officer Sean McMullen, who recovered a loaded 30.06 caliber rifle, a .22 caliber rifle and a shotgun. It is a felony to possess a firearm on school grounds.

    The police chief previously warned the student not to bring firearms to school, but the young man told the chief he thought that since it was after school hours, it was permitted. He was at a school event at the time - about 5:45 p.m.

  • Car stolen at knifepoint from Chiefland

    An unknown assailant committed armed carjacking, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and theft of a motor vehicle, according to a Chiefland Police Department incident report by CPD Officer Ken Hutson.

    Gregory L. Meitinger, 50, of Chiefland had allowed Darrin Keith Bracewell Jr., 19, of Gainesville to use Meitinger's blue 1992 Toyota Corolla, the officer reported.
