  • Synthetic drugs disappear from Chiefland shelves

    No more Mr. Nice Guy, Scooby Snax, Mad Hatter, Cloud 9 or Kool Beanz are to be found in Chiefland.
    The city Police Department went on a roundup on April 2 cleaning hundreds of packets, envelopes and containers of products labeled bath salts, incense, spice, K2 and synthetic cannabis from convenience stores shelves or requiring sellers to return the products to wholesalers.

  • Reward for info on copper thefts from farms

    A $500 reward is being offered by the Levy County Sheriff's Office for information that leads to an arrest in the theft of copper wire from irrigation pivots on farms in the county.
    The sheriff's office has seen an increase in copper wire thefts with Lt. Shawn Hunt, commander of the Ag/Marine Unit, investigating five copper wire thefts from irrigation pivots in March. The thefts have occurred in the Williston and Chiefland areas and most likely are occurring at night time.

  • Police: man arrested for steroids

    Levy County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Jonathan Racer, 38, of Chiefland, Sunday at about 11 a.m. after it was discovered he was in possession of two syringes loaded with anabolic steroids, according to an LCSO press release.
    Racer, who also didn't have a valid driver's license, was pulled over for a traffic violation. Deputy Roger Bell noticed the syringes and a pill bottle sitting on the passenger-side seat, the release stated.

  • Polston named chief justice-elect of Florida

    TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Supreme Court has unanimously elected Ricky Polston – a man whose roots lie in the Panhandle town of Graceville – to become the state’s 55th chief justice starting July 1.
    Polston will become only the second chief justice from Jackson County and the first to come from west of the Apalachicola River since 1925.

  • Bronson man arrested for firearms, drugs, police say

    Sheriff's deputies arrested Christopher Lee Holder, 29, of Bronson, Sunday after they discovered a rifle, pistol, 20.5 grams of marijuana and a small pipe in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
       Holder, a convicted felon, was pulled over because he was not properly displaying a tag on his vehicle, according to the press release.

  • Camper arrested at state park

    A woman camper at Manatee Springs State Park who was screaming and cursing refused an order by a Levy County deputy to calm down and go to bed, so he took her to jail, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

  • Fugitive nabbed after 16 years

    A fugitive living in Montbrook was arrested after 16 years on the run by the Levy County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force on Friday, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.

    Benjamin Monroe Hamilton, 59, who used the alias Benjamin Crawford, was jailed on an outstanding Highland County warrant dating back to 1996 for violation of probation. He was convicted of running over and seriously injuring a man with a vehicle during a bar brawl.

    n March 22, Austin Ryan Bouten, 20, Williston, lewd and lascivious behavior on a victim. Bond $100,000.
    n March 22, Crystal Elaine Braswell, 29, Old Town, VOP.
    n March 22, Spencer McSwain Colson, 28, Newberry, obstruction, fleeing/eluding. Bond $65,000.
    n March 23, Ashley Nicole Coronado, 23, Bronson, VOP. Bond $10,000.
    March 19, Jeanne Cutrona-Vera, 52, Morriston, out of county warrant. Bond $2,000.

  • Man charged with arson

    The state Fire Marshal's Office has determined that a house fire on Sunday, April 1, on Northeast 92 Court in Bronson was an arson and a man on felony probation on a drug charge has been charged with setting the fire, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
    Jermain Lashaun Griffin, 28, of Bronson, is being held without bond on an arson charge at Levy County Jail.

  • Morriston man arrested in farm thefts

    Henry Joel Melendez Prestol, 32, of Morriston, faces three counts of burglary, three counts of grand theft, six counts of dealing in stolen property, forgery and uttering a forged instrument according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
    He was arrested after two horse farms in the Morriston area reported numerous thefts from January through March.
