  • FWC supports ‘Operation Dry Water’ for 4th year

    Last year, nine people died from boating accidents related to alcohol and drug use in Florida. That represents 13 percent of the state’s fatalities for 2011.
    “Alcohol- and drug-related boating accidents are preventable,” said Capt. Tom Shipp, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Boating and Waterways Section. “Even one death is too many.”

    The Levy County Sheriff reports the following arrests:
    n June 2, Kenneth Scott Adams, 43, Chiefland, failure to register motor vehicle. Bond $75.
    n  June 1, Zachary David Armlin, 18, Chiefland, dealing in stolen property, four counts burglary. Bond $60,000.
    n  June 3, Scott Alexander Arnold, 30, Chiefland, reckless driving. Bond $1,000.
    n  May 29, David Adam Bandt, 28, Archer, no valid DL.
    n  May 31, Rhonda Kay Blair, 49, Williston, two out of county warrants. Bond $40,000.

  • Chiefland man arrested in Cedar Key burglaries

    Cedar Key police were kept on the run Memorial Day weekend when two people — an 18-year-old man and a juvenile — from Chiefland broke into several cars and at least one, possibly two homes in the Paroda, Whiddon and Shellcrest avenues area.
    But the thefts are on the way to being solved with the arrest of one person and the search for a second person — a juvenile, said Police Chief Virgil Sandlin.

  • Wild party on Suwannee sandbar ends in gunfire, arrests

    An  Memorial Day concert and party on a sandbar on the Suwannee River  that is popular with boaters got out of hand with fights and gunfire and the arrests of three people on Sunday by state Fish and Wildlife officers.
    A concert that drew about 1,500 people and 400 boats and watercraft was going on at the sandbar near Hart Springs in Gilchrist County, according to an FWC spokeswoman.  The agency had seven officers in three boats on the river at the time.

    n Michael Wayne Aurilio, petit larceny first offense and illegal use of credit cards, 98 days with credit for 98 days served on each; battery on officer and criminal mischief, 1 year 7 days with credit for 98 days served, 2 years drug offender probation on each; all served concurrently. Must pay civil judgment, jail fund, probation costs, $4,043 restitution.

  • Women's defense class offered

    The Williston Police Department is partnering with Jerry Heines to sponsor a “Women’s Awareness and Defense Class” to teach women how to avoid being the victim of a physical attack. Heines has formed his class to prepare women to have a survivor mindset and to use simple and practical techniques of self defense. This is a one night, four hour course and not meant to train anyone in complex martial arts forms. The class is free.

    n May 26, Wayne Matthew Beaumont, 29, Inglis, battery.
    n May 27, Charles Borttz, 47, Pompano Beach, tampering, battery.
    n May 28, Cecil Nelson Brooks, 45, Helena, Ga., disorderly intoxication. Bond $5,000.
    n May 28, Jake Junior Bryant, 31, Largo, loitering, causing child to commit act of delinquency. Bond $25,000.

  • Home invasion suspect's dinner interrupted

    It was hunger that did in the second suspect in a home invasion robbery in Bronson on May 10.
    Levy County Sheriff's deputies and U.S. Marshals, acting on a tip, arrested Patrick Shawn McLaughlin, 45, as he tried to enjoy a quiet dinner at the Barnyard Junction Restaurant in Fort White.
    Deputies from Columbia County and Levy County  took McLaughlin into custody and treated him to breakfast guaranteed at the Columbia County Detention Facility.
