  • Uncle helping niece dies in accident

    A Cross Creek man who was helping his niece from Bronson pull her vehicle out of a rut died after a vehicle in the opposite lane hit him on Thursday at 8:20 p.m. on State Road 121 near Alachua County Road 346, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report..

    Garrett H. Cutler, 59, was removing the chains used to pull a black 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by Heather Crane, 19, of Bronson, from where it was stuck by the roadway. Crane's vehicle was sitting in the southbound lane and partially in the northbound lane of SR 121.

  • Chiefland fire competes in combat challenge

    Chiefland Fire Rescue’s combat team competed in the Scott Safety Firefighter combat challenge at the Daytona International Speedway recently before the start of the Daytona 500.

  • Man dies in freak runaway wheel incident

    One man was killed and another seriously injured Monday morning when a tire came off a vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 41, went airborne topped a 6-foot chain link fence and struck Ivan J. Sandquist, 33, of Williston, killing him instantly.

    • Feb. 12, Michael Bradley Answorth, 22, Morriston, aggravated battery, VOP. Bond $50,000.
    • Feb. 13, Ariell M. Brock, 28, Chiefland, VOP.
    • Feb. 10, Shane Douglass Carnes, 19, Williston, leaving scene of crash, failure to register motor vehicle, attached registration not assigned, no valid DL. Bond $16,750.
    • Feb. 14, Danny Ray Clark, 62, Riverview, VOP.

  • Sheriff honors volunteer

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office and C.O.P. (Citizens on Patrol) volunteers met to recognize the 2013 C.O.P. Volunteer of the Year Stella Damann at the group's annual banquet on Monday, Feb. 10.

  • Public safety participates in competition

    Levy County Department of Public Safety members volunteered their own time to compete in the 2nd Annual Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) Competition at the 2014 Fire Rescue East Conference in Daytona Beach Jan. 23. Each team consisted of a four-person group with one additional officer for “command and control.” In the scenario, a two-person team is responsible for searching, assessing and packaging the downed firefighter.
