  • Florida ranks high for fire science schools

     Of the top 80 institutions in the U.S. providing the best return on investment to emergency medical technician (EMT) graduates, 20 institutions belong to the Florida College System (FCS). Fire Science Online identified the top programs to help students and families make informed decisions.

  • House fire at Rainbow Lakes

     A Levy County Department of Public Safety fire captain noticed a column of black smoke in Southeast Levy County, in Rainbow Lakes Estates on the evening of Sept. 4.

    The LCDPS fire captain headed to the source and found a two story, 2,400 square-foot structure fully involved with fire. The home was vacant.

    LCDPS Station 2 in Morriston, Battalion 1, Medic 3 in Inglis, South Levy Volunteer Fire Department, Rainbow Lakes Estates Volunteer Fire Department, Marion County Fire Rescue and Inglis Fire Department responded to the scene.

  • Remembering Sept. 11

    Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum speaks at Williston Elementary School to students, educators and community members about the importance of remembering the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

    The school marked the 12th anniversary of the takeover of American passenger planes and crashing them into the World Trade Towers, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania and the more than 3,000 deaths at the hands of terrorists.

     n Ryan Kent Beach, aggravated assault with deadly weapon without intent to kill, 5 years with 3 years minimum/mandatory, credit for 104 days served; armed burglary, 5 years drug offender probation. Must pay civil judgment, jail fund, $744.70 restitution. 

  • Man arrested in Williston robbery

    A Williston man has admitted committing the Thursday night armed robbery of a manager at the Grocery Depot supermarket, formerly Hitchcock’s, in Williston, according to a Williston Police Department press release.

  • Motorcyclist in traffic death identified

    The 68-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 15 has been indentified as Ewald Josef Hackenberger of Berlin, Germany.

    He is Levy County's 15th traffic fatality for 2013.

  • Retired deputy spearheads charity drive

    In August, more than 100 pounds of drink can tabs or pop tops were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House Charities on behalf of Retired Levy County Sheriff's Office School Resource Deputy (SRO) Donna Roe and the Bronson Middle/High School. Before retiring in 2012, Roe instituted the community service drive at the Bronson Middle/High School where students were asked to collect and turn in pop tops in exchange for community service hours. These hours are needed to fulfill their requirements for the Bright Futures scholarships offered to high school Students.

  • Bronson woman dies in Saturday crash

    A one-vehicle crash at the Northeast 120th Street and Northeast 30th Street, a right-turn only intersection, on Saturday at 11 p.m. claimed the life of Cacie-Leigh Morgan, 23, of Bronson, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
