• Fanning man arrested on assault, drug charges

    Levy County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jermaine Carl Curtis, 32, on assault, drug and false imprisonment charges that stem from an incident in the Fanning Springs area that happened on Oct. 4. 

    A woman reported going to Curtis' home to purchase illegal narcotics from him but during the deal Curtis grabbed her, moved her into another room where he took more than $1,000.00 in cash rom her, beat her and threatened her with a firearm.

  • Gold coin theft - a mystery

    A Chiefland couple has reported the theft of 20 gold coins valued at $24,589, stored under a bed in a guest room, has gone missing from their home sometime between April and early September and the Chiefland Police Department is investigating the case as grand theft.

    The couple, in their 80s, said family, friends and a cleaning lady have been in the home during that time period. And they said the cleaning person, who has worked for them for five years, had a key to the home.

  • Man arrested in wife's disappearance 35 years ago

    Thirty six years to the day after Merl McFarland Mackey, Jr. married Evelyn LaVerne Trulock in Pinellas County, and almost 34 years after she disappeared from their Hernando County home, Mackey was booked into the Levy County Jail on a charge of 1st degree premeditated murder.

    •Oct. 14,Spencer Theodore Barnes, 22, Newberry, DWLSR, drug possession. Bond $1,500.

    •Oct. 18, Allen James Brannin, 58, Cross City, possession of listed chemical w/intent to manufacture controlled substance.

    •Oct. 13, Angela Kaye Carter Callihan, 36, Inglis, FTA. Bond $1,000.

  • Chiefland woman charged in stabbing of relative

    An argument over who would care for an elderly relative escalated and ended with one person stabbing the other with a box cutter, according to a Chiefland Police Department report.

    Lasonya Denise Collins, 46, of Baxley, Ga., then transported the elderly relative to North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville where she was later arrested by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Chiefland Police Department.

  • Burglary investigation leads to five arrests, meth lab

    The Levy County Sheriff's deputies who responded to a Chiefland resident's complaint about a burglary at a shed on his property must have thought it was their lucky day as they ended up arresting five people and discovering a methamphetamine lab.

    On Friday, Sept. 11, Chiefland resident said his shed had been broken into within the last 18 hours. Deputies learned guns, ammunition and tools had been taken when the burglars cut locks and forced the door off the tracks to gain entry.

    •Sept. 21, Kerry Leann Bush, 35, out of county warrant.

    •Sept. 27, Cory Taylor Chadwick, 29, Chiefland, brawling. Bond $2,000.

    •Sept. 23, John Champion, 26, Chiefland, robbery with weapon.

  • Driver cited in crash that affected traffic light box

    The traffic light at the intersection of State Road 24 and U.S. 27A in Bronson was not functioning for most of Tuesday, Sept. 22 after a driver entered the intersection while the light was still red and collided with another vehicle that took out the traffic light’s control box.

    Caeli Woodard, 17, of Bronson, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Venture and stopped behind another vehicle on SR 24, while the light was red.
