  • Patrol sergeant named

    Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith has promoted Cpl. Todd Houchin to the rank of sergeant for the Patrol Division. Houchin is with Alpha Company with Lt. Perry Ott as Watch Commander.
      Houchin began his law enforcement career with the Cedar Key Police Department in February 1998. He started with the Sheriff's Office in August 1999 and was promoted to the rank of corporal in February 2003.
    Smith said Houchin has "stepped up to the plate" in a leadership role for his shift.

  • Sexual predator registers address

    Jesse J. Crain, 30,  has registered as a sexual predator with the Levy County Sheriff's Office because he is living within the county. Crain is required to notify law enforcement whenever he changes his address.
      Crain was convicted in Pinellas County in 2002 for lewd and lascivious molestation on a child under 12. Crain is living tat 11851 N..E 106th  Court in Archer.

  • Quick draw's first victim: himself

    A man  who was practicing his "quick draw"  at a friend's home shot himself in the leg, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
    Deputies said when they responded to a call about a shooting at a home on Northeast 61st Place in Bronson, they found  Robert Bishop,  62, had a single gunshot wound in the back of his right calf.

    n July 12, James Devon Baker, 46, Morriston, two counts FTA. Bond $2,500.
    n July 10, Jose Angel Barrera, 31, Melbourne, VOP. Bond $5,000.
    n July 14, James Bowen, 45, Inglis, disorderly intoxication.
    n July 10, Jamie Lee Burton, 39, High Springs, three out of county warrants. Bond $15,000.
    n July 15, Salvador Jose Cavillo, 33, Brooker, battery. Bond $10,000.
    n July 11, Kimberly A. Childs, 49, Williston, DWLS habitual DUI. Bond $35,000.

  • Two identified in murder, suicide

    Two people who died in an apparent murder/suicide Tuesday afternoon on Northwest 168th Lane in Fanning Springs have been identified by the Levy County Sheriff's Office.
    Sheriff's deputies were called to the residence of Genoveva Magnolia Recinos Castillo, 46,  by a sobbing female juvenile who told 911 operators that someone had killed her mother.
    Based on information from neighbors and the child, officers located Arturo Ranferi Zacarias, 26, in a room of his residence across the street. Zacarias appeared to have died from self inflicted wounds.

  • Businessman arrested on tax charge

    Michael Pitts, former owner of Pitts Custom Glass, Inc., in Chiefland, faces two felony charges related to a failure to file six tax returns, and four misdemeanor charges of refusing to file returns and and pay taxes.
    Pitts, a resident of Ocala, was arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office. If convicted he could face up to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines and repayment of investigative costs,

    n June 29, Antonio Martinez-Calero, 29, Williston, no DL. Bond $1,000.
    n June 29, Boyd Wayne Chandler, 35, Inglis, out of county warrant. Bond $2,500.
    n June 28, Gerald Edward Cook, 48, Williston, possession of drug equipment, disorderly intoxication, obstruction W/OV.
    n June 25, Bryan Jacob Crosby, 20, Bronson, two counts grand theft, two counts dealing in stolen property. Bond $60,000.

  • Home invasion suspect hunted

    The Levy County Sheriff's Office is seeking a home invasion suspect who fled from Chiefland where he is suspected of attempting to kick in a door to an occupied residence before fleeing to his hometown of Bronson and eluding officers, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
    Willie James Ellison Jr., 19, is being sought and anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-877-349-8477. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward.

    Levy County Sheriff's Deputy Willie Pete Barnes, a K-9 officer, has been promoted to the rank of corporal in the Patrol Division.  Barnes has  a long record of distinguished service and an unwavering commitment to excellence in the field of law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office press release.

  • Hand grenades found on Rosewood property

    Last week, Todd Thompson, of Rosewood,made a very unusual discovery. Thompson had just moved to the area and was in the process of cleaning a portion of his property when he noticed two objects that only took only a second to identify; hand grenades.
    Everyone has seen them, in movies strapped to soldiers' chests, in pictures of  servicemen preparing to depart for battle. But who'd expect to find them in his or her own front yard?
