  • Three injured in pileup by Bronson Speedway

    An off-duty Alachua County Sheriff's deputy helped put out a vehicle fire and rescue a seriously injured woman after three cars collided by the Bronson Speedway on State Road 24 on Tuesday, Aug. 19, shortly before 3 p.m.

    All three motorists involved in the wreck were taken to UFHealth Shands Hospital for treatment — two with minor injuries and the third with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol report by Trooper M. Corrao.

  • Chiefland man arrested in Dixie burglary

       Law enforcement officers arrested 42-year-old Wesley B. Goold, of Chiefland, Aug. 14 in connection with a May burglary and theft.

       In May, deputies responded to a burglary at a part-time residence on S.E. Highway 19 where they learned that the suspect(s) stole several tools, antique boat motors and an old homemade boat that the victim’s deceased father had made.

    Months later, while investigating another complaint at an abandoned residence, sheriff’s investigators noticed some of these stolen items hidden behind the residence.

  • Public Safety holds monthly in-service training

       The Levy County Department of Public Safety hosts monthly in-service training. The invitation is extended out to all departments with first responders that serve the county.

    This month the training consisted of pediatric airway management. On June 17, 18 and 19, all on-duty LCDPS members were required to attend the training. Members from Chiefland Fire Rescue also participated.

    This regular multi-agency training promotes teamwork among the emergency response departments serving the citizens and visitors of Levy County. 

  • Two arrested in cooking meth in Chiefland motel

    A man and woman staying at the Manatee Springs Motel were arrested by Chiefland police Wednesday when, according to police, the two were found to be making methamphetamine.
    "I got two anonymous calls," a manager at the hotel said Friday. The first call was unintelligible, she said. "I says, 'When you calm down, call me back.'"
    Then the woman called back and said, "What I'm trying to tell you is they're making dope!"
    "I said, 'Oh, really? I guess we have to have that checked in to.' "

  • Driver sought in hit-and-run

    A driver who hit a man who had been ejected from his vehicle onto U.S. Highway 19 just south of Northwest 147th Place after another accident on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2:50 a.m. is being sought by the Florida Highway Patrol and the public is being asked to help.

    An FHP report by Trooper M.A. Kennard said a witness described the vehicle as a white car, possibly a Ford Taurus.

  • Drug task force makes six cases in Inglis

    Deputies from Citrus and Levy counties, working as the Citrus/Levy Drug Task Force, made several seizures of drugs and other evidence in the Inglis area including opening six new cases based on evidence they had recovered. 

    The deputies located and dismantled two clandestine methamphetamine labs that had been previously in operation.

    They also seized 14 cannabis plants that were being cultivated in three different locations.  Charges for the manufacture of cannabis are pending against one individual at this time. 

  • County's newest firefighters get bunker gear

    The Northwest Florida Volunteer Firefighter Weekend Council, Inc. was awarded a FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant to help volunteer fire departments in Florida recruit and retain firefighters by awarding bunker gear to their eligible new recruits.

    Levy County Department of Public Safety (LCDPS) Director David Knowles contacted the Council to obtain new gear for the 10 new Firefighter I Recruits from local Departments who recently completed the 2013-2014 LCDPS Firefighter I program.

    • Aug. 5, Chad Alexander Cumbo, 30, Bronson, VOP.

    • Aug. 5, Jessie James Eichelberger, 44, Williston, battery on person age 65 or older. Bond $50,000.

    • Aug. 8, Blake Fontana, 20, Morriston, four out of county warrants. Bond $100,000.
