  • Watermelon pageant Saturday

    A highlight of the 59th Annual Watermelon Festival is the crowning of the Watermelon queen and her court on Saturday, June 1.

    But before that happens there must be a pageant to choose the queen, princess, and other members of the court.

    This year's pageant is on Saturday, May 25, beginning at 10 a.m. at Chiefland Elementary School.

    The festival's organizer and main sponsor is the Chiefland Woman's Club. 

  • Watermelon Festival parade info

    The 59th Annual Chiefland Watermelon Festival, hosted by the Chiefland Woman's Club, is Saturday, June 1 at Trailhead/Depot Park on U.S. Highway 19 South/South Main Street. 

    The parade is at 11 a.m. and will organize at the Chiefland High School parking lot and proceed south on U.S. 19/Main Street to the park. 

    To participate in the parade you MUST fill out and return the attached form by Friday, May 3.

  • Sheriff hosting a DUI event Saturday

    From the Levy County Sheriff's Office:

    On Saturday, May 25, the Levy County Sheriffs Office and Chiefland Police Department will be hosting a multi-agency DUI, driver's license vehicle safety checkpoint on Northwest 14 Street in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

    This is part of a statewide effort to crack down on impaired driving over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

    Drivers are asked to have their insurance, registration and drivers license ready when entering the checkpoint.

  • Police on the lookout for copper thieves

    A recent spate of copper thefts from air conditioning units in Chiefland has police scratching their heads.
    "So far, we've had no luck," said Chiefland Police Deputy Chief Al Graves Friday about 13 thefts from homes, churches and businesses that started mid-March.
    The latest thefts, according to police, happened on May 19 and involved stolen copper from units at two businesses and one home, all on the north side of town.

    The state has set aside $3 million for projects aimed at improving the health of springs within the Suwannee River Water Management District's 15-county boundary, according to state officials.

    Levy ARC Director Betty Walker was all smiles last week, standing with a group of people in LARC's cafeteria in front of dozens of men and women who receive services from the organization that, since the 1970s, has strived to make a difference in the lives of the intellectually and developmentally disabled in the Tri-County area.

    Parents and fans wait for the Chiefland High School Indians after the state championship game against Trenton last week at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. 

    It was the first time an Indians team had reached the state championship playoffs.
