  • Bronson man arrested for firearms, drugs, police say

    Sheriff's deputies arrested Christopher Lee Holder, 29, of Bronson, Sunday after they discovered a rifle, pistol, 20.5 grams of marijuana and a small pipe in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
       Holder, a convicted felon, was pulled over because he was not properly displaying a tag on his vehicle, according to the press release.

  • Camper arrested at state park

    A woman camper at Manatee Springs State Park who was screaming and cursing refused an order by a Levy County deputy to calm down and go to bed, so he took her to jail, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

  • CNA course at CF Levy Center

    The College of Central Florida will offer a Certified Nursing Assistant course at the Levy Center beginning in May.
       This program prepares the individual for work as a nursing assistant in nursing homes and prepares students to take the Florida CNA exam. The course consists of classroom instruction as well as lab practice and clinical experience.

  • They’re back; Sturgeon returning to Suwannee River

    They’re back. Gulf sturgeon have begun their annual migration back into the Suwannee River.
    Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers have reported seeing the fish jump already this year.
    People have been injured in accidental collisions with the jumping sturgeon. In 2011, six boaters were hurt and 11 encounters with sturgeon were reported.

  • Fugitive nabbed after 16 years

    A fugitive living in Montbrook was arrested after 16 years on the run by the Levy County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force on Friday, according to a Sheriff's Office press release.

    Benjamin Monroe Hamilton, 59, who used the alias Benjamin Crawford, was jailed on an outstanding Highland County warrant dating back to 1996 for violation of probation. He was convicted of running over and seriously injuring a man with a vehicle during a bar brawl.

    Severe drought, according to Suwannee River Water Management District Engineer Meagan Wetherington, has caused the spring to quit flowing. And recent rains, though not enough to recharge the aquifer, have caused water from nearby swamps, heavy with tannins, to flow into the spring, staining it muddy brown.
