  • Party switches keep supervisor busy

    The deadline to be registered to vote or change any information on voter registration records for the Aug. 14 primary is July 16, but Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell is already busy helping voters change their party affiliation and getting voter information cards in the mail this week.
    Asbell, who is not seeking re-election, said some voters have been coming in to change their party registration from Democrat to Republican and have said they are doing so in order to vote in the sheriff's race.

  • FWC supports ‘Operation Dry Water’ for 4th year

    Last year, nine people died from boating accidents related to alcohol and drug use in Florida. That represents 13 percent of the state’s fatalities for 2011.
    “Alcohol- and drug-related boating accidents are preventable,” said Capt. Tom Shipp, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Boating and Waterways Section. “Even one death is too many.”

    n June 11, Mark Edward Broat, 22, Charleston, W. Va., burglary, petit theft. Bond $75,000.
    n June 16, Eugene Thomas Days, 44, Williston, petit theft, trespassing. Bond $6,000.
    n June 13,  James Smith Ferguson, 56, St. Petersburg, DUI, leaving scene of crash. Bond $3,000.
    n June 11, Kimberly Ann Foster, 24, Old Town, FTA. Bond $2,000.

  • Wilbur Dean candidate for Levy Clerk of Court

    Citing a number of opportunities for improvement, Wilbur Dean announces his candidacy for election to the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court for Levy County.  As provided by the Florida Constitution this office is responsible for circuit and county court cases, the official records and assisting the board of County Commissioners by accounting for county finances which includes budget preparation, paying the bills and writing the paychecks for all department employees under the Board.

  • County OKs voice for Williston police

    For the first time Williston Police Department officers and the Levy County Sheriff's deputies will be able to communicate seamlessly. It only cost $2,077.37 for the solution to a problem that has put a wall of silence between their two radio systems.
    While it will not bring down the wall entirely — as both agencies use different bands for communication — it will lower the bar.

  • Bronson votes no on park expansion

    Bronson council members missed an opportunity to expand the town's park Monday night when they voted 3-2 against purchasing about 14 acres of adjacent and nearby property. About 11 acres owned by Virginia B. Allen adjacent to the park was being offered to the town for about $51,000, according to an e-mail sent to the town from Libby Barr, a representative of the families wanting to sell the property. The e-mail also states that Allen was willing to finance part of the balance at 6 percent interest for four years.

  • County wants help with time capsule

    On April 2, 1513, three ships that had sailed out of Hispanola in March sighted a verdant landscape that their leader Juan Ponce de Leon named La Florida.
    While the name honored the lushness of this state, it also harked to his Catholic faith which was celebrating Easter, known as Pascua Florida — the Festival of Flowers.
    In the 500 years since de Leon and his sailors landed on the Atlantic side of Florida things have changed.

  • Warning on Cedar Key water

    Ceday Key is the latest on an ever-growing list of victims suffering from record-low groundwater levels.
    Cedar Key Sewer and Water District Chair David Beach announced in an emergency meeting Tuesday that saltwater intrusion has impacted all three of the city's working wells.
    Beach said measurements taken from the city's No. 4 well on Monday were at 730 miligrams per liter, almost three times the allowable standard of 250 mpl.
    "We have an unfortunate situation right now we feel is because of the drought ..." Beach said.
