  • County tentatively approves budget, tax

    The Levy County Commission approved a tentative budget of $62,352,856 and a property tax millage of 8.5759 by a 4-1 vote on Sept. 6 with Chair Danny Stevens of Williston (D-District 5) dissenting.

  • County OKs fire, EMS fees

    Property owners will be billed higher assessments for fire and emergency medical services in their 2012 tax bills. 

    On Tuesday evening, before a full room, the Levy County Commission approved a $90 residential assessment for fire services by a 4-1 vote with Commissioner Mike Joyner of Morriston (R-District 1) dissenting and $119 residential assessment for EMS by a unanimous vote.

  • Bank honored for role in community

    More than 100 people showed up at the Tommy Usher Pineland Center Tuesday night for the Greater Area Chiefland Chamber of Commerce's annual Industry Appreciation Banquet. This year's banquet honored the Chiefland branch of Capital City Bank as Business of the Year.

    "We appreciate the Chamber selecting us for the Business of the Year," said Capital City Bank Group Inc. President Cliff Bradley a few days before the event.

  • Bronson considers selling water to Otter Creek

    Some say Bronson has the best water in the state.

    And Otter Creek, just a dozen or so miles west with its own water supply tainted, would like its neighbor to share.

    Joe Mittauer of the engineering firm Mittauer and Associates Inc. addressed the Bronson council Monday night about a plan Otter Creek is proposing that involves piping up to 108,000 gallons of water per day from Bronson’s pristine water supply.

  • Emergency manager/musician Mark Johnson to be on Letterman

    Levy County Emergency Management Director Mark Johnson, also a musician, is the third annual recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. 

    Along with the plaque, Johnson receives a $50,000 check, a sculpture by artist Eric Fischi and he will perform with Martin on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on Sept. 24. The show airs locally on MyGTN, Channel 4, at 11:30 p.m. The award is bestowed by the Steve martin foundation.

  • Morriston couple killed in plane crash

    A Morriston couple was killed Aug. 30 when their experimental aircraft crashed into a field in Marion County.

    Gilbert Jennings, 53, and Catherine Jennings, 50, were pronounced dead at the scene.

  • Bronson teen cleared in battery case

    State prosecutors say they will not pursue charges against an 18-year-old Bronson man arrested in June for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon who said he was defending his home.

    “Nobody’s been charged in the case,” said chief investigator and spokesperson for the state attorney’s office of the 8th judicial circuit court Spencer Mann.

  • County budget hearing Thursday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m.

    The Levy County Commission public hearing on the proposed 2012-2013 budget will be at 6 tonight at the Levy County Courthouse. 

    The TRIM notices that were mailed recently had the date as Sept. 16, which was an error as the date is on a Sunday.
