  • County property tax 8.01 mills

    The Levy County Commission — absent one member due to sickness — unanimously approved a property tax of 8.01 mills on Monday evening and a budget of $61,235,783 for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.

    The final millage is the result of a compromise by the commission which voted last week to raise property assessments for fire and emergency medical services to $90 and $119, respectively, to cover the cost of operations and to end using property taxes to cover those operations.

    According to the National Weather Service, weather conditions for the rest of the day include widespread, numerous showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 80s. Southwest winds around 15 mph with gusts to around 30 mph.

    Tonight: Partly cloudy. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the evening...then isolated showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Lows in the mid 70s near the coast and in the upper 60s inland. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

  • Signs point to Suncoast opening

     Julio Garcia, an installer with Allied Sign of Tampa, puts the finishing touches on the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union sign at its new Chiefland branch that opens on Monday, Sept. 17. The credit union, which has 51 branches, has been converting the storefront next to CATO fashions in the Walmart shopping center on U.S. Highway 19.

  • County budget hearing Monday, Sept. 17

    The Levy County Commission will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, for a public hearing on the budget for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.

    The meeting is open to the public. It will be held int he commission meeting room in the Levy County Courthouse on Court Street in Bronson.

  • Citizen arriving day late

    To our readers,

    Please accept our apology for the Chiefland Citizen not being in your mail or post boxes on Thursday because the paper arrived late from the printer in Crystal River.

    The delivery to the Post Office on Wednesday was too late for box delivery on Thursday. The papers were delivered to the Post Office on Thursday morning and should be in boxes on Friday.

    Please understand the Post Office is not at fault. It is the Citizen's responsibility to get the papers to the post office on time.

  • ‘Cry of the Banshee’ to open Friday night

    The group that assembled, there inside the curse-ridden 16th Century stone walls of an Irish manor, froze and stood in terror at the sudden outburst.

    “What’s that terrible cry?” one asked. “It sounds like an animal in a trap.”

    “Not an animal …” replied another. “A banshee.  And we must bait the trap.”

    A few moments later, the cry was heard again. But this time the room erupted in laughter.

    Al Macri (D-Morriston) will vie against Mike Joyner (R-Morriston) for the County Commission District 3 seat Nov. 6.

    In a candidacy announcement, Macri wrote:
