  • Prescribed burn smokes up U.S. 129 and U.S. 19

    A perscribed burn in the area of U.S. Highway 129 ans U.S. Highway 19 in Levy County, is causing smoke that may impact roadways in the area, according to a Florida Highway Patrol press release. 

    Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling in these areas. Visibility may deteriorate quickly due to smoke/fog type conditions especially during the night time and early morning hours. Motorists are reminded to reduce their speed and utilize low beam headlights in order to adapt to changing weather conditions.

  • FWC lifts restrictions on Suwannee River

    The Suwannee River floodwaters at Wilcox fell below 9 feet Saturday and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) deactivated boating restrictions in Zone 4.

    Zone 4 is the section from the County Road 340 Bridge at Rock Bluff to one mile below the Fowler Bluff boat ramp. This 51-mile segment falls under the boating restrictions as long as the Suwannee is at 9 feet or more at the Wilcox gauge, where flood stage is 11 feet.

    The FWC activated restrictions in this zone March 11.

  • Refuge open house Saturday

    The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge and Open House will be Saturday, March 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Refuge Headquarters off Route 347.

  • Sheriff's Office wins safety award

     The Levy County Sheriff's Office has won a safety award for having no “at-fault” accidents for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, one of only four that were awarded in the state.

  • Three charged with making meth at hotel

     Three people were arrested Wednesday, March 6, on charges of manufacturing and selling meth out of the Bronson Motel while a 5-month-old infant was also in the room, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Department press release. 

  • Woman dead in Saturday accident

    A 28-year-old woman died and two children and a man were hospitalized after an accident on Saturday at about 5:30 p.m., according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

  • City-town water deal could stagnate

    Early committee discussions on a proposed water line from Chiefland to Otter Creek have Chiefland commissioners saying a better deal needs to be put on the table.

  • Sunshine Week shines bright in state

    For two weeks at the end of February, reporters from 31 news organizations, including the Chiefland Citizen (Levy Newspaper Group), participated in a project with the Florida Press Association to determine the availability or records from Florida's clerks and court offices in all of the state's 67 counties.
