    U.S. Naval League Cadet Izaak Evans, of Chiefland, was selected as the Manatee Division League Cadet of the Year. Throughout the year, cadets are evaluated based on their attendance and performance at drills, grades in school, community service and advancement in the program.

  • Former sheriff's lieutenant sentenced to 30 years in sexual attack

    The former Levy County Sheriff's lieutenant who attacked and held his ex-girlfriend prisoner for 10 hours, beating and raping her, will spend 30 years in prison followed by 15 years sex offender probation with electronic monitoring.

    It was an ordeal that the victim told the court had left her filled with shame, guilt, self-loathing; unable to look at a 9-mm gun and unable to be around crowds; robbed of her spark and desire in life. “I feel I cannot trust anyone,” she said.

  • Levy man dies from eastern equine encephalitis

    A 90-year-old Levy County man is dead after contracting eastern equine encephalitis, according to the Levy County Health Department.
    Health Department Director Barbara Locke said Thursday the man, who was not able to be identified because of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, got the disease some time in the middle of January and died about a week later.
    "It's unusual," Locke said. "We're the first human case (in 2013) for the state."

  • Fish fry for Alford family

    The Robinson Family, owners of Robinson's Seafood, is hosting a fish fry on Monday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the restaurant at 6991 S.W. State Road 24  to benefit the family of John Fredderick “Johnny” Alford, who died in a hunting accident on Jan. 19.

  • State Fair opens today in Tampa

        The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida State Fair Authority are partnering to celebrate 500 years of agriculture at this year's Florida State Fair. The fair officially beings Thursday, Feb. 7, when Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and his fellow Cabinet members will "flip the switch" to illuminate the Midway in Tampa. 

  • Mosaic show at CK Arts Center

     The Cedar Key Arts Center is hosting show of mosaics in its Main Gallery and “Textiles 'Art and Soul' a Retrospective” by Sarah Westenberg  in its Members Art Gallery through Feb. 24. There is no charge to visit the galleries at 457 2nd St., Cedar Key.

  • Sexual predator moves into county

    Lamont Lewis Nelson, 32, designated a sexual predator for his conviction in 1999 on sexual battery on a child under the age of 12, has registered his home address with the Levy County Sheriff's Office. By Florida law Nelson is required to notify law enforcement whenever he changes or establishes a new address.

    Nelson, convicted in Highlands County, was just released from prison and has registered his address as: 12451 N.E. 108 Terr., Archer.
