  • Bronson batters football-depleted Newberry

    With all but one varsity player unavailable last Thursday night, Dec. 6, Newberry High's basketball Panthers brought up the whole junior varsity and went out to face the Bronson Eagles.

    Bronson overwhelmed them 72-42 in a hard-fought mismatch.

    Nine of Newberry's varsity players are on the football team that played Saturday for the state championship, and one more player was hurt. That left the Panthers' JV alone to handle the varsity Eagles.

    They started off pretty well.

  • Lady Braves top Fort White

    The Chiefland Middle School girls basketball team turned on the jets in the second half aganst visiting Fort White on Thursday, Dec. 6, powering the Lady Braves to a 33-16 victory.

    Chiefland trailed 12-9 at halftime but went on a 17-2 burst to start the second half.

    On Tuesday, the CMS boys defeated Trenton, 33-29. Hermie McClendon led the way with 14 points. Marcus McMahon had eight points. Deric Allen had seven points and Deshawn Roland had four.

  • Dixie's straight 16 sinks JVs

    The Chiefland High boys junior varsity basketball team kept it close against host Dixie County for a while last Friday night, but a second half cold spell allowed the host team to pull away to a 58-34 victory.

    Chiefland pulled to within 41-29 early in the third quarter. However, Dixie rattled off 16 straight points as the Indians suffered from poor passing and shooting.

    The Chiefland JVs played Tuesday night at Williston and are home against Newberry on Friday night.

  • Ajay Ulmer: We've only just begin

    While the Florida high school football championships are being played in Orlando, Chiefland High coach Ajay Ulmer has had the chance to reflect on his first year in charge of the Indian gridiron tepee.

    Although he probably isn't much of a fan of the old singing group The Carpenters, one of their hit songs "We've Only Just Begun" would describe what 2007 was all about.

  • Dixie too tall an order for Indians

    It was a case of too much big guy for the Chiefland High boys basketball team in its game last Friday night at Dixie County High.

    Junior center Tevin Henderson was a one-man wrecking crew, leading the Bears to a 69-60 victory over the Indians.

    Dixie improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in Class 3A District 5 play. Chiefland fell to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in district action.

    Henderson practically did it all for the Bears, as the shorter Indians had trouble containing him.

  • CAAA hoops alive and well

    The Chiefland Area Athletic Association will have a winter basketball season, after all.

    Signups were initially slow, and it looked like there might not be any ball, but a very successful registration session on Saturday gave the CAAA satisfactory numbers.

    "We sent out flyers to the schools and really got a good response,"said CAAA president Wayne Weatherford. "We have 75 kids now. It will be a small league, but we have enough."

    The ages for those registered range from 5 to 14.

  • Chamber mixer Thursday

    The Chiefland Citizen is hosting a Chamber Mixer at the depot on Thursday, Dec. 13 between 5-7 p.m. Members, friends, and associates are invited.

    Before the mixer, at 4:30, there will be a special meeting of the general membership to vote on the board?s recommended amendments to the by-laws.

    The amendments are available in the Chamber office for review or you can call for a fax or e-mail set.

  • County pulls most of its funds out of investment pool

    BRONSON - Up north in Tallahassee, the weather was too warm for a frozen pool from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, but when it came to securing investments - that was a different story.

    All activity in a state-run investment pool was frozen from Nov. 30 until Dec. 6 as the result of a run on funds. This impacted Levy County.

  • Chiefland police chief gets raise

    Chiefland City Commission members unanimously agreed to increase Police Chief Robert Douglas' annual salary by another 3 percent to $54,636.31, effective Dec. 11.

    The chief received a 3 percent raise as of Oct. 1. Commissioner mentioned the 6 percent raise granted police officers through negotiations with the Police Benevolent Association.

  • City leader thinks four-year term is better than two

    Chiefland City Commissioner J. Rollin Hudson Jr. thinks the elected term for the office should be four years rather than two years.

    He said the instability of a regime change every couple of years is unsettling to city workers.

    Mayor M. Teal Pomeroy said city workers should be working for the people, regardless of who serves as the city manager or on the City Commission.

    Vice Mayor Teresa Barron agreed with Hudson about four years being a better term of office for Chiefland City Commissioner.
