  • Double murder mars season

    BRONSON - The little town of Fanning Springs became the scene of a horrific double murder on Friday at about 9 p.m., according to information released from the Levy County Sheriff's Office.

    Hugo Devalle, 28, and Elfego Cano, 34, both residents of the McDougal Mobile Home Park at 9210 N.W. 178 Lane died as the result of an ambush, LCSO spokesman Lt. Evan Sullivan said. Both men are from Guatemala.

  • Property tax reform can save money

    Using an average of 18 mills as a typical amount for Levy County taxpayers in the current tax year, Property Appraiser Francis Akins said property tax legislation on the Jan. 29, 2008 ballot could save some individual taxpayers $188.50 each.

    About 40 percent of the people in Levy County who are qualified for Homestead Exemption will see no change in their tax bill from this legislation, Akins added.

    The proposed legislation will mean zero additional savings for people who are qualified for Homestead Exemption, but who have an appraised property value of less than $50,000.

  • No progress in pay-off of worthless check

    BRONSON - Levy County Fair Association President Bob Levesque said on Dec. 20 he has made no progress in his attempt pay a $2,000 worthless check he wrote to Robinson's Racing Pigs on Nov. 13.

    Spencer Mann, a spokesman for Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bill Cervone, said on Dec. 20 the Levy County office of the State Attorney has received two worthless check complaints against Levesque and the Fair Association.

    Those two complaints are under review, Mann said. That is all he could say about the potential worthless check cases.

  • New ordinance regulates sexually oriented business

    BRONSON - With only a half dozen citizens watching on the night of Dec. 18, the Levy County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted an ordinance to regulate sexually oriented businesses in the unincorporated part of the county.

    Rather than conduct the public meeting in the commission's meeting room, a courtroom was used to allow for more people to watch the action.

    While the mass of general public failed to appear, the proposed ordinance became law nonetheless.

  • Inmate medical costs reduced

    BRONSON - About $40,000 worth of medical bills paid by Levy County to North Florida Medical Center and Shands at the University of Florida were negotiated down from the original charges of about $60,500 incurred by Levy County Jail inmates, according to records.

    Levy County Attorney Anne Brown received approval for settlement of inmate medical expenses for former LCJ inmates Roy L. Britt, 23, of Chiefland and James R. Pendlebury, 51, of Chiefland.

  • County to seeks easements for entry to Adamsville Cemetery

    BRONSON - It will not be until after some dust settles that a road to allow access to the Adamsville Cemetery is built, according to information released at the Levy County Board of County Commissioners' Dec. 18 meeting.

    J. Rollin Hudson Jr. tried to give the county a 15-foot easement off of U.S. Alt. 27, but County Road Administrator Bruce Greenlee said there are too many problems with the project to accept any easements yet.

  • Lady Eagles excellent on the court and in the classroom

    BRONSON -- The Bronson High girls varsity hoops team is off to a great start this season, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why.

    Coach Greg Hamilton is blessed with talent plus girls who play smart ball.

    Backing up the smart part are five players who are straight A honor students, making life a joy for Hamilton.

    Juniors Christine Schroeder, Sarah Parkin, Samantha Cabrera and Kamize Johnson and her younger sister Rasheedah Johnson, a sophomore, have been a joy to coach.

  • Schools to face more $$$ cuts?

    This past summer, the Florida Department of Education warned school districts across the state that a general revenue shortfall could lead to a 4 percent cut in funding.

    Deterioration of the housing market was fingered as the main culprit.

    Lo and behold, they were right, as each district had their take shaved by 4 percent. In Levy County, that added up to slightly more than $634,000.

    Now just three months later, more storm clouds are on the horizon.

  • Company offers help with grants

    BRONSON - A company known as Synergy Solutions for Florida wants to add Levy County to its list of communities involved in the Florida Community Trust (FCT) program.

    Richard Rubin and John Canada of Synergy Solutions said their work would cost the county nothing as they applied for the $66 million available from the state in the next two years to add land to the state's green space inventory.

  • $1.4 million bid accepted for CR 345 paving

    BRONSON - A bid of $1.4 million to pave 12.6 miles of Levy County Road 345 from CR 332 to State Road 24 was accepted Dec. 18 by the County Commission.

    Lee Mills of Mills Engineering presented the bid tabulations. Mills Engineering is the county engineering company.

    Anderson Columbia of Lake City won the bid award, subject to approval from the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT), which is paying for the work through the Small County Road Assistance Program (SCRAP).
