  • Motorcyclist in traffic death identified

    The 68-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 15 has been indentified as Ewald Josef Hackenberger of Berlin, Germany.

    He is Levy County's 15th traffic fatality for 2013. 

  • County millage at 8.3307

    Levy County property owners will pay a property tax of 8.3307 mills — that is $8.3307 per $1,000 of a home's assessed value after exemptions this year.

  • County renews fire, EMS assessments

    The Levy County Commission unanimously renewed property assessments for fire, EMS and solid waste and raised the road assessments for some property owners to keep up with rising costs in a public hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

    But it did not pass the fire and emergency medical services assessments without first hearing from Morriston resident Frederick Brouse and Pine Lodge bed and breakfast owner Sergio Soares of Inglis.

  • Williston grocery robbery solved with arrest

    A Williston man has admitted committing the Thursday night armed robbery of a manager at the Grocery Depot supermarket, formerly Hitchcock’s, in Williston, according to a Williston Police Department press release.

    Brian Hernandez of Williston was arrested on Friday, Sept. 13, following an investigation and after being advised of his rights confessed to Sgt. James Bond. Hernandez will be charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and burglary.

  • Fanning Springs fire seeks county help

    Fanning Springs, which straddles Levy and Gilchrist counties, made its case for more fire money in the 2013-2014 Levy County budget and got a compromise.

  • Bronson vets donate blood

    On Aug. 31, The Life South Blood Mobile pulled into the parking lot of the AMVETS Post 88 in Bronson for a 6-hour event hosted by Ladies Auxiliary 88.  

    Fourteen members were able to give blood, and after 14 units were given, a total of 42 lives were potentially helped and possibly saved. 

  • Senior Center health fair Wednesday

    The Chiefland Senior Center's Annual Health Fair, sponsored by the Suwannee River Economic Council will be on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will be held at the Center, 305 S.W. 1st St., Chiefland. 

    There will be health providers on hand to provide information and to answer questions, as well as free screenings for balance, hearing, blood pressure and more. Flu shots will also be given and there will be Medicare counseling. 

    Light refreshments will be served.
