  • Hastings: Levy Schools in need of more money

    Finding revenue to keep the school district growing and improving is still first and foremost on Superintendent Bob Hastings’ mind.

    Wednesday, the superintendent addressed about 20 people at the first Superintendent’s Breakfast, sponsored by the Levy School Foundation.

    Hastings is optimistic that the School District, like the nation, will rebound from the recent sour economic downturn, but he doesn’t think it will be this year, or even next.

  • Road Closing Today U.S. 19 to close in Dixie for deputy's funeral

    There will be a road closure in Dixie county Sunday Jan 17th from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. U.S. Highway/State Road 19 will be closed both directions in Cross City. A detour will be setup, vehicles coming west into Cross City will be detoured to County Road 351A southbound to CR 351 northbound back to SR 19. Vehicles coming east into Cross City will be detoured on to CR 351 southbound to CR 351A northbound back to SR 19.

      

  • Small-town business owner angry with Walmart

    A Chiefland business owner told city commissioners at Monday night’s meeting that Walmart is hurting his business.

    Renee Pichet, owner of Chiefland RV Park, said that Walmart’s practice of allowing RVs and travel trailers to park overnight is causing him to rethink $100,000 worth of renovation and expansion plans he had for his park.

    “Walmart’s great,” he said,” but they became campground-friendly.”

  • Only two county commission seats on fall election ballots

    The Levy County Supervisor of Elections Office is gearing up for the off-year elections and planning on only having two county commissioner races on the ballot.

    There has been some question whether interim Levy County Commissioners Marsha Drew and Chad “Cracker” Johnson would have to run for election after suspended Levy County Commissioners Sammy Yearty and Tony Parker were convicted in a federal political corruption case in December.

  • Signs of life returning to proposed hospital

    A city official, at Monday night’s commission meeting, said plans for the much-anticipated construction of a hospital in Chiefland are back on the drawing table.

    Laurie Copeland, project and finance coordinator for the City of Chiefland, told commissioners a company called DASCO Companies, LLC, based out of Palm Beach Gardens, is working to acquire the rights for construction of the proposed 60-bed facility.

    “We’re rockin’ as fast as we can roll,” Copeland said.  “These guys have money.”

         Chad Allen Reed, Sr., 33, of Cross City, Florida, a Captain with the Dixie County Sheriff’s Department, died in the line of duty on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, protecting the lives of the people around him. Born on September 24, 1976 in Perry he lived in Steinhatchee until he married and moved to Cross City, Florida.      Mr.

  • Dixie deputy dies in Cross City shooting

    The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating how a chase across four counties for the suspect in the shootings of four women — including two who died — came to a tragic end Thursday evening with a shootout at a Cross City gas station and the death of Dixie County Sheriff’s Capt. Chad Reed.

    Reed, whose funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Cross City, leaves behind a wife and two young sons. Visitation is Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rick Gooding Funeral Home in Cross City.

    Students take second round of H1N1 flu spray this week  

    A second round of free H1N1 (Swine) flu nasal spray vaccinations will be provided by the Levy County Health Department for Levy County students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

    Consent forms that were sent home with students must be completed by a parent/guardian and returned to the school in order for a student to receive the vaccination.
