  • Sheriff's Reports

    Deputies with the Levy County Sheriff's Office and other officers recently arrested the following people. Suspects are presumed innocent until they are proved guilty in a court of law.

    * Richard Z. Horne, 63, of Chiefland was arrested March 27 for aggravated assault and resisting arrest without violence. Bond 32,000.

    * Ronald W. Knea, 51, of Williston was arrested March 28 on Duval County warrants for two counts of grand theft, and theft from a person older than 65 years old. No bond.

    Youthful ranchers score at fair market

    FANNING SPRINGS - Bidding was hot from morning into the evening on April 2 at the 56th Annual Suwannee River Fair Livestock Show and Sale.

    There were almost 460 animals sold by children from Levy, Dixie and Gilchrist counties. The total gross sales equaled $723,070.

    The tradition of buyers paying children more than market value for cattle and swine held fast this year as it has in the past.

    The top dollar went for the Reserve Champion Market Hog, which sold at $18 a pound.

  • Youthful ranchers and farmers score at fair market

    FANNING SPRINGS - Opening bids were hot on April 2 at the 56th Annual Suwannee River Fair Livestock Show and Sale.

    The Grand Champion Fat Steer, raised by Trenton Senior Future Farmers of America, went for $7 a pound.

    The Reserve Grand Champion Fat Steer, raised by Corey Jerrels of Bronson (Kountry Kids 4-H), sold at $6 a pound.

    The Grand Champion Feeder Steer, raised by Brianna Bishop of Gilchrist County (Flatwood Friends 4-H), showed a top bid of $8 a pound.

    The Reserve Grand Champion Feeder Steer, raised by Kristin Hardin of Chiefland Sr. FFA, sold for $3.50.

  • Chiefland lifters second behind Dixie

    CROSS CITY –Chiefland High's strongmen traveled to Dixie County High on March 27 with hopes of repeating as Tri-County Football Weightlifting Conference champions.

    The Indians grunted and groaned with the best of them, but this year they fell a little short, as they finished runnerup to host Dixie.

    There were six schools represented in the meet.

    Competition includes best lifts in the bench press and clean in 10 different weight divisions.

  • Boys tennis tops Cedar Key

    Chiefland traveled to Cedar Key last Tuesday, March 25,and picked up a win.

    Top seed Will Keels beat the Sharks' top seed Joseph Bishop in a 7-4

    tiebreak, the first time Keels had beaten Bishop in their high school

    careers.

    "He worked really hard for that one," said Indians' head coach Matt Flenner.

    Three seed Tyler Johnson also won his match 8-4 over Frankie Beckham,

    but two and four seeds, Cody Williams and Hans Velasquez lost their

    matches to Matt Reichert (4-8) and Ryan Lumley (4-8), respectively.

  • Chiefland nets victory over Newberry

    The Chiefland High girls tennis team won its final regular season match of the season on Thursday, March 27, defeating visiting Newberry, 5-2.

    The Lady Indians finished the season with a record of 4-4.

    Chiefland got singles wins from Rachel Keels at No. 2, Jarobyn Rome at No. 4 and Sina Khaleel at No. 5.

    The Lady Indians also won both doubles matches. Cindy Pollard and Khaleel won at No. 1 and Keels and Rome won at No. 2.

    Chiefland will play in the district tournament April 7-8 at Oak Hall.

  • Indians win fourth in a row

    The Chiefland High baseball team won its fourth straight game last Thursday night, March 28, as Ory Pitts kept visiting P.K. Yonge in check in a 6-3 Indian decision.

    The victory upped Chiefland?s record to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in district. P.K. fell to 9-6 and 5-4.

    Pitts improved his mound mark to 6-1. Losing pitcher Alex Mikkelsen saw his record dip to 5-3.

  • Fort White nips Lady Indians

    The Chiefland High girls softball team saw bad judgement on the basepaths snatch away a chance at victory last Thursday night, March 27, as visiting Fort White scored twice in the seventh for a 3-1 victory.

    The Lady Indians lost their third straight and watched their record dip to 6-8.

    It was senior night with Amye Grieves, Brooke Williams, Cassie Labat, Hagen Lewis and Jerrica Grimsley all taking a bow before the game.

  • Former Indian standout Bennett looks forward to giving back to Chiefland

    As an athlete and scholar, Cedric Bennett has done Chiefland proud.

    After excelling in basketball and baseball at Chiefland High, Bennett went on to be a scholarship athlete at Lynn University in Boca Raton.

    Bennett played three years of hoops and two years on the diamond for the Knights.

    Then, Bennett was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and played Rookie League ball in Arizona last year.

  • ASA Late Models wow Bronson Speedway crowd

    BRONSON –The largest crowd of the young racing season filed into Bronson Motor Speedway on Saturday night, March 29, for the Flagship RV 100 –the 2008 lid-lifter for the ASA Late Model Southern Series.

    The fans were treated to a race with many twists and turns and ultimately, a wild and crazy finish at the high-banked 1/3 mile track.

    When the smoke had cleared, Jimmy Lang, a 19-year-old out of South Carolina, emerged as the winner.
