  • Mosquitoes are on the attack

    Spring of 2007 in Levy County was a little scary, as drought brought wildfires that turned the skies an eerie black.

    The scenario has been different this year, as lots of rain in the winter and early spring have eased the fire danger.

    But as nature would have it, one threat quelled can bring about another one.

    In this case, it's called the attack of the mosquitoes.

    Anyone who has been outdoors in the evenings and early mornings the past couple weeks can relate.

  • Crash-A-Rama at Bronson Speedway

    Bronson Motor Speedway will let it all hang out this Saturday night with its annual Crash-A-Rama.

    This nutty affair includes School Bus Figure 8s, a Boat Race, Roller Derby, a Reverse Race, a Stock V8 Demo Derby, Twin Flagpole Races, a Skid Car Race and a 4, 6 or 8 Cylinder Enduro.

    The grandstands open at 4 p.m. and the show will start at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is $20 and all kids 11 and under are free. For more information contact the speedway office at (352) 486-2763.

  • Panthers lose in OT in the rain

    Mistakes in the pouring rain caught up with the Gulf Coast Panthers last Saturday night, as the Newberry Saints stole a 12-6 North American Independent Football League game from the locals at Strickland Park.

    The game went overtime. The Panthers were driving for the winning touchdown, but a fumble and 65-yard return provided the Saints with the winning points.

    The Panthers saw their record fall to 2-2.

    Gulf Coast tied the game at 6-6 in the second quarter when quarterback Mike Padgett scored on a 20-yard keeper.

  • Bicyclists end long trip at Fanning Springs State Park

    FANNING SPRINGS - Fanning Springs State Park belonged to bicyclists last Friday, April 4, as some 650 pedalers - a lot no doubt tired and sore - pulled into the 50-acre natural wonder on the Suwannee River to mark the end of a six-day, 300-mile trip from Clearwater.

    The "Gulf Coast Trail Link Tour 2008" is part of Bike Florida's 15th anniversary.

    Bikers from all over the Sunshine State as well as many northern states enjoyed lunch, a shower and just plain rest under balmy conditions.

  • JVs down Mayo to finish season 11-2-1

    MAYO - The Chiefland High junior varsity baseball team finished up the 2008 season with a record of 11-2-1 after defeating host Lafayette County, 8-6, on April 3.

    It avenged a loss to Lafayette earlier in the season.

    Chiefland broke it open with six runs in the second inning. Jacob Reidy and Garrett Schmidt had doubles in the big frame while Jarquez Green and Bo Beauchamp added singles. Reidy was the winning pitcher.

    The Chiefland JVs lost 7-1 to visiting P.K. Yonge on March 27.

    Chiefland fell to Lafayette, 13-7, on March 24.

  • Indians shaky in tournament opener

    WILLISTON - Make no mistake, the Chiefland High baseball team is in the midst of a fine season.

    The 14-3 record through this past Monday speaks volumes for that.

    But every once in a while, the Indians just don't have it. And when they're bad, they're pretty darn bad.

    Take Monday's 11-4 loss to Dunnellon on the first day of the Williston Spring Break Tournament, for example.

    Lackluster, lethargic and lifeless are just a few adjectives on how the Indians looked.

  • Boys third, girls fourth in county track meet

    ROSEWOOD - The Williston High boys and the Cedar Key girls were the team winners in the Levy County Track and Field Meet held Tuesday, April 1, at the new Rosewood Track.

    The Chiefland boys were third and the girls were fourth. Four schools competed.

    Allie Wheeler won the 1600 and took second in the 3200 and 800, but the Chiefland girls did cover enough event to make a big dent in the field.

  • Bronson Town Hall moving to Jackson House

    BRONSON - Barring an 11th-hour red light, the Bronson Town Hall offices will soon be making a short move from its present location on U.S. 27 back to the historic Jackson House, which has recently been renovated.

    Operating out of the Jackson House would be Town Clerk Donna Conquest, Mayor Franklin Schuler and Council members Beatrice Mongo, Aaron Edmondson, Melody LaFlam and Berlon Weeks. Water and sewer bills would be paid at the new location.

  • Sheriff comes clean on pending audit

    Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith felt compelled to let the public know about some minor bookkeeping issues at his office when he called a press conference April 8 to explain why an upcoming audit report will show areas where some improvements are needed.

    "The taxpayers look to us to be good stewards with their money," Smith said.

  • County continues with paging improvements

    BRONSON - Chiefland Fire Chief John Ward, speaking on behalf of the Levy County Fire Advisory Board, convinced the County Commission on March 25 to continue improving the paging system through Williams Communication as planned.

    This project was not among the budgeted the capital improvements projects for this fiscal year, County Coordinator Freddie Moody said.
