  • Indians shaky in tournament opener

    WILLISTON - Make no mistake, the Chiefland High baseball team is in the midst of a fine season.

    The 14-3 record through this past Monday speaks volumes for that.

    But every once in a while, the Indians just don't have it. And when they're bad, they're pretty darn bad.

    Take Monday's 11-4 loss to Dunnellon on the first day of the Williston Spring Break Tournament, for example.

    Lackluster, lethargic and lifeless are just a few adjectives on how the Indians looked.

  • Boys third, girls fourth in county track meet

    ROSEWOOD - The Williston High boys and the Cedar Key girls were the team winners in the Levy County Track and Field Meet held Tuesday, April 1, at the new Rosewood Track.

    The Chiefland boys were third and the girls were fourth. Four schools competed.

    Allie Wheeler won the 1600 and took second in the 3200 and 800, but the Chiefland girls did cover enough event to make a big dent in the field.

  • Bronson Town Hall moving to Jackson House

    BRONSON - Barring an 11th-hour red light, the Bronson Town Hall offices will soon be making a short move from its present location on U.S. 27 back to the historic Jackson House, which has recently been renovated.

    Operating out of the Jackson House would be Town Clerk Donna Conquest, Mayor Franklin Schuler and Council members Beatrice Mongo, Aaron Edmondson, Melody LaFlam and Berlon Weeks. Water and sewer bills would be paid at the new location.

  • Sheriff comes clean on pending audit

    Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith felt compelled to let the public know about some minor bookkeeping issues at his office when he called a press conference April 8 to explain why an upcoming audit report will show areas where some improvements are needed.

    "The taxpayers look to us to be good stewards with their money," Smith said.

  • County continues with paging improvements

    BRONSON - Chiefland Fire Chief John Ward, speaking on behalf of the Levy County Fire Advisory Board, convinced the County Commission on March 25 to continue improving the paging system through Williams Communication as planned.

    This project was not among the budgeted the capital improvements projects for this fiscal year, County Coordinator Freddie Moody said.

    BRONSON - Many Levy County workers enjoy a form of compensation, which cushions the impact of rising fuel prices. They drive county vehicles to and from home, and the gasoline or diesel is included.

  • Sheriff's Reports

    Deputies with the Levy County Sheriff's Office and other officers recently arrested the following people. Suspects are presumed innocent until they are proved guilty in a court of law.

    * Richard Z. Horne, 63, of Chiefland was arrested March 27 for aggravated assault and resisting arrest without violence. Bond 32,000.

    * Ronald W. Knea, 51, of Williston was arrested March 28 on Duval County warrants for two counts of grand theft, and theft from a person older than 65 years old. No bond.

    Youthful ranchers score at fair market

    FANNING SPRINGS - Bidding was hot from morning into the evening on April 2 at the 56th Annual Suwannee River Fair Livestock Show and Sale.

    There were almost 460 animals sold by children from Levy, Dixie and Gilchrist counties. The total gross sales equaled $723,070.

    The tradition of buyers paying children more than market value for cattle and swine held fast this year as it has in the past.

    The top dollar went for the Reserve Champion Market Hog, which sold at $18 a pound.

  • Youthful ranchers and farmers score at fair market

    FANNING SPRINGS - Opening bids were hot on April 2 at the 56th Annual Suwannee River Fair Livestock Show and Sale.

    The Grand Champion Fat Steer, raised by Trenton Senior Future Farmers of America, went for $7 a pound.

    The Reserve Grand Champion Fat Steer, raised by Corey Jerrels of Bronson (Kountry Kids 4-H), sold at $6 a pound.

    The Grand Champion Feeder Steer, raised by Brianna Bishop of Gilchrist County (Flatwood Friends 4-H), showed a top bid of $8 a pound.

    The Reserve Grand Champion Feeder Steer, raised by Kristin Hardin of Chiefland Sr. FFA, sold for $3.50.

  • Chiefland lifters second behind Dixie

    CROSS CITY –Chiefland High's strongmen traveled to Dixie County High on March 27 with hopes of repeating as Tri-County Football Weightlifting Conference champions.

    The Indians grunted and groaned with the best of them, but this year they fell a little short, as they finished runnerup to host Dixie.

    There were six schools represented in the meet.

    Competition includes best lifts in the bench press and clean in 10 different weight divisions.
