  • Bull Bash '08 was great

    The economy might be sluggish and money tight, but that didn't affect support for the FFA's annual Bull Bash held last Friday and Saturday nights at Carter's Arena.

    In fact, folks came out in droves to watch rodeo-style bull riding, at the same time raising money for FFA's Alumni Association.

    "It went really good –probably one of the better ones we've probably had," said R.D. Skelton, who has been directing the Bull Bashes the past decade for Renegade Rodeo out of Chiefland.

  • Wild Hog Canoe Race - Pain and joy on the Waccasassa

    Saturday morning, Tara Mace of Gainesville got an unwelcome phone call. Her partner for the Wild Hog Canoe Race, the 31st Annual adventure to benefit Levy Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC) couldn't make it.

    Tara was stuck - where to find a partner at 6 a.m. on race day? She called her mom in Bronson.

    Theresa McFarland answered her daughter's call and agreed to give it a whirl.

    "I hung up the phone and thought – I don't have any idea what I'm doing," she said.

    "I kind of twisted her arm," Mace admitted.

  • High school spring football starts this week

    With apologies to the baseball team, football season is here, as far as Ajay Ulmer is concerned.

    "I feel bad they got upset, but what happened has happened and we're looking ahead,"said Chiefland High's football coach. "It's football season."

    CHS baseball, ranked eighth in Class 3A, lost to P.K. Yonge in the district semifinals last week. The Indian baseball team has a number of players who will be coming over to spring football practice, which begins Thursday.

    "For us, we're glad to have them,"Ulmer said. "We've got a few key guys on the baseball team."

  • Baker takes third Sportsman win at Bronson Speedway

    Matt Baker had his 02 car humming in Saturday night's 30-lap Sportsman feature at Bronson Motor Speedway, as he led coast-to-coast and took the checkered flag.

    It was the third win of the still-young season for Baker, who hails from Inglis. He entered the race sixth in Sportsman points.

    Baker stayed ahead of the 08 of William Edwards the entire race.

    Two of the division's top competitors -points leader Matt Blum and No. 2 man Shelton Bowers -went out after getting together on lap 6. Both were fighting for third place.

    Todd Kelly ended up third in the 83 car.

  • Chiefland athletes excel in college ball

    Getting playing time on the top-ranked junior college softball team in the nation can be a chore, but Whitney Mills has made the most of her limited opportunties this spring at Santa Fe Community College.

    Mills, a freshman out of Chiefland High, has gone 8-for-16 at the plate for the Lady Saints, who take an incredible 51-3-1 record into this weekend's Region 8 Tournament in Auburndale.

    That puts Mills'average at .500. She has been a pinch-hitter and DH.

    Santa Fe will open up tourney play Friday against Lake City. Games will continue Saturday and Sunday.

  • Bronson teen to compete in 4H national shoot

    BRONSON -With a name like Hunter, it makes sense that he would be a bulls-eye shot with a rifle.

    Hunter Lowe, a 16-year-old Bronson resident, recently took first place in the age 9-18 Smallbore Rifle division of competition at the Florida 4H Finals held in Bronson. Off of that performance, he has qualified for the 4H Nationals, which will be held June 21 in Nebraska.

    Lowe was a bit surprised about winning state competition considering he had little experience with a 22.

  • Tigers send Henry to state

    WINTER PARK -Durrell Henry finished 15th in the shot put at the FHSAA Class A track and field final in Winter Park Friday, but the finish didn?t matter.

    What mattered was that Henry was the lone athlete from Trenton High School at the state meet, and he represented his school well. The senior shot putter qualified for state with a 41-6 effort at the regional meet at Tallahassee Maclay last week, good for fourth place there.

  • Trenton High baseball 2nd in district tourney

    GAINESVILLE -The Trenton High baseball team qualified for the Class 2A regional tournament by finishing second in the District 5 event played at Oak Hall.

    The Tigers fell in the championship game, 4-3, to the host team in an eight-inning thriller.

    Trenton took a 15-12 record into Tuesday's regoinal quarterfinal game at Jacksonville-Providence. Providence was 23-4 and ranked No. X in 2A.

    "The Times Union has them rated the best team in the entire Jacksonville area,"Tigers coach Scott Guthrie said.

  • Students learn history through music

    "Primarily, it's to remind people. Most of us go through life day by day, existing. It's to remind people we can choose. We can author our own story."

    For Donna Wissinger, this is the objective of the educational and entertaining program "An American Tapestry." Piano player Joy Myers accompanied her in the program given at Chiefland High School's auditorium for a large audience of middle schoolers.

  • Kelly Beckham leaving Bronson

    Bronson Eagles' head basketball coach Kelly Beckham announced Thursday that he will leave Bronson Middle-High School, where he has been for nearly 25 years and more than 500 wins, for Gainesville High School.

    Beckham will finish out the school year at Bronson, and start at GHS in the new school year.

    His academic duties at GHS will be largely similar to those at Bronson -- he will be a Dean of Students. What will change the most is the basketball. GHS, a 5A school, has about 2,000 students; Bronson, in class 2A, has 453 or fewer.
