  • Students learn history through music

    "Primarily, it's to remind people. Most of us go through life day by day, existing. It's to remind people we can choose. We can author our own story."

    For Donna Wissinger, this is the objective of the educational and entertaining program "An American Tapestry." Piano player Joy Myers accompanied her in the program given at Chiefland High School's auditorium for a large audience of middle schoolers.

  • Kelly Beckham leaving Bronson

    Bronson Eagles' head basketball coach Kelly Beckham announced Thursday that he will leave Bronson Middle-High School, where he has been for nearly 25 years and more than 500 wins, for Gainesville High School.

    Beckham will finish out the school year at Bronson, and start at GHS in the new school year.

    His academic duties at GHS will be largely similar to those at Bronson -- he will be a Dean of Students. What will change the most is the basketball. GHS, a 5A school, has about 2,000 students; Bronson, in class 2A, has 453 or fewer.

  • LARC: Why they race

    Paul Roesch used to work at McDonald's in Williston, but he struggled there. Going out to tidy up in the dining room, he wasn't sure when to stop wiping one table so he could move on to the next.

    James O'Sullivan wants to work at Hitchcock's, bagging groceries and rounding up carts. So far, though, the only shift that's open is in the evening, and he and his mother prefer that he work during the day.

    David Estep has a talent for folding clothes perfectly.

  • Tag-the FFA way

    Heather Rucker, director of the Chiefland Middle School Future Farmers of America, is a woman on a mission.

    She, along with her faithful FFA students, is on a drive to drum up sales for a specialty license plate being offered by the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles. The tag features the FFA emblem and on the bottom reads "Agricultural Education." Money raised from tag sales goes directly to Florida FFA.

    Rucker was the guest speaker and chief salesperson at the April 16 Chiefland Rotary Club luncheon at Bell's Family Restaurant.

  • Cooper wins for third time this season in Super Stocks

    BRONSON -Brent Cooper became the first three-time winner at Bronson Motor Speedway this year, as he took his 97 car to victory lane in last Saturday night's 25-lap Super Stock feature.

    The Super Stocks were one of three features on a cool night that saw the crowd turnout affected by two other big motorsports events in the area ?Monster Trucks in Chiefland and Pinks Dragsters in Gainesville.

  • P.K. Yonge shocks Indians in district tournament

    FORT WHITE -This isn't the first time you read it, but baseball is a funny game, indeed.

    In the Majors, Wild Card teams beat the Division champs in the playoffs.

    In the best-of-one crap shoot otherwise known as FHSAA districts, teams that dominated during the regular season can see their seasons suddenly end with a shocking loss to a low seed.

    It happened Tuesday afternoon at Fort White High, as Chiefland fell to P.K. Yonge, 2-0.

  • Lady Indians lose in semifinals

    FORT WHITE - P.K. Yonge is the new Class 3A District 5 softball champion.

    To claim the first-place trophy, the Lady Wave first had to dethrone defending champ Chiefland in the semifinals before defeating host school Fort White in the final.

    Chiefland advanced to the April 16 semifinal by defeating Dixie County in the quarters.

    Chiefland had lost twice to P.K. during the regular season, but both games were nailbiters.

  • Jones to play at Daytona Beach CC

    TRENTON -Trenton High's fine lefthanded pitcher -Andy Jones -will be continuing his baseball career at Daytona Beach Community College.

    "They recruited him,"said THS coach Scott Guthrie. "It's a good fit. They encourage academics and stay on top of players in the classroom."

    Jones has been the ace of the Tigers for three years. As a junior, he finished with a 7-1 record. This year, he is 6-5, but the record is not indicative of how well he has pitched. For example, Jones has lost two, one-run games to Chiefland.

  • Trenton baseball finishes regular season 13-11

    TRENTON-It's been an up-and-down season for the Trenton High baseball team.

    The ability to win the close ones has haunted coach Scott Guthrie.

    "We've lost six games by one run,"said Guthrie, whose team's overall record was 13-11 heading into Tuesday's Class 2A District 5 Tournament opener against Bronson. "We had a terrible March at the plate."

    While the inconsistency has been frustrating for coach Guthrie, things are definitely better than his first year at the helm when the Tigers finished 3-15.
