  • Maps firm, candidates line up

    With the state Supreme Court's approved redistricting maps in effect for the 2012 elections and Levy County, for once it is not parceled out several ways.
    Of course, while keeping the county in one piece, it can no longer claim the votes — or attention — of three state representatives, two state senators and two representatives in Congress.
    The county's 40,000-plus residents must be content with one state representative, one state senator and one member of Congress.
    As a result of redistricting, the county is now in:

  • County moves to formalize special events permits

    If you are planning to hold a big wedding at your home or hold a fishing tournament, you won't need a special events permit with clearances from the building, sheriff's office and public safety and health departments among others.
    But if you are planning a gathering that could draw the public, impact the neighbors, traffic, public safety, the environment or have outside effects, then you might need a special events permit under an ordinance being considered by the Levy County Commission.

  • Bicyclist dies from accident injuries

    A 12-year-old boy has died as the result of an accident, the second such accident within a week in Bronson, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.
    Keanu Becker of Bronson died on Tuesday at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He was taken there after the accident occurred on Sunday, at about 7 p.m., at Northeast 108th Lane and Northeast 87 Terrace.

  • Babe Ruth regional coming to Chiefland

    Every June the city of Chiefland is host to 2,500 to 3,000 visitors from throughout the state, many of them pint-sized, as they come to compete in the Chiefland T-ball Invitational Tournament.
    This year, city residents should keep wearing their welcoming smile until July as the city will be host to the Babe Ruth League's Regional T-ball Tournament that will draw teams from 12 Southeastern states.
    Wayne Weatherford, president of the Chiefland Area Athletic Association, said the youth league will host both tournaments.

  • Power outage hits Tri-County Area

    A power outage hit the Tri-County Area and beyond Tuesday evening just as many folks were sitting down to dinner or to watch the evening news on TV.
    Customers of Central Florida Electric Cooperative and Progress Energy Florida lost power at 5:54 p.m. when lightning struck a Progress Energy transmission line between Bronson and Inglis, said Tim Hastings of CFEC.
