  • More sewer on the way for the City of Fanning Springs

    Fanning Springs is pushing ahead with a growing service area for its sewer system.

    Talks of the expansion sparked some debate among Fanning Springs City Council members and a concerned citizen at a meeting last Thursday.

  • Meeks to take over commission

    County Coordinator Fred Moody was faced with a dilemma Tuesday that was a first in his 20 years or so with the county: No commission chair or vice chair to call the Nov. 18 meeting to order so new members can be sworn in.

    That's because Commission Chair Ryan Bell of Chiefland (R-District 4) and Vice Chair Chad Johnson of Chiefland, (R-District 2), lost their re-election bids in the Aug. 26 primary and Tuesday was their last day on the job.

    From the Florida Highway Patrol:

    Smoke from a controlled burn on private property near Old Town, Fla may affect portions of the following roadways: , SR 349 and Dixie County Road 351a. Motorist traveling in this area are advised to drive with care, by reducing their speed, watch for advisory signs and using headlights when encountering areas of reduced visibility. Motorist may want to consider an alternate route if possible. FHP is monitoring SR349 and CR 351A. Smokey conditions in this area are expected to continue over the next several days .

  • Car lot vandal at large

    Law enforcement officials are looking for information on a man who smashed the windshields and cut the tires of 44 cars at at a Chiefland auto dealership Sunday night.
    "Every car here. Every car in the back. Junk cars and everything," is what Stickland Auto Solutions Inc. Owner David Strickland said Monday afternoon about the damage he was confronted with.

  • Bronson mayor questions early voting petition

    The subject of early voting in the Town of Bronson, though sleeping dormant for more than a year, was again brought to light Monday night during a discussion on revisions to various amendments to be placed on a referendum ballot early next year.
    The issue, which was hotly debated by council members from June to August of 2013 and rejected by council two times, received the most attention Monday night, especially from Bronson Mayor Franklin Schuler.

    “Don’t kill the messenger,” wasn’t a saying expressed by some on the Bronson Town Council Monday night regarding a story written weeks ago by an area blogger about what some have called a secret vote.

    “You always come out with something that’s one sided,” Mayor Franklin Schuler said to blogger Jeff Hardison about the story, which centered around emails sent out to council members Sept. 30.

    For the first time Levy County will put its legal notice business — including the annual delinquent tax rolls — up for bid in an effort to save taxpayer money and put an end to the contentious discussions that have accompanied it.
