Chiefland Elementary student Cheyenne Walker was recognized at Tuesday's meeting of the Levy County School Board for her outstanding fund-raising effort on behalf of March of Dimes March for Babies. Walker personally raised $1,251 of the $6,690 total raised by CES students in this year's Walkmania. Carol Jones, the district's School-to-Work coordinator, introduced the award in light of her own dedication to March of Dimes.

The Florida Department of Education released the results of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in reading and math for third-graders last Thursday.

The results show that 68 percent of Levy County students in reading and 77 percent in math meet or exceed expectations for their grade level. This year’s results are down from 2008, which showed that 74 percent of Levy students in reading and 79 percent in math met or exceeded expectations.

Tyler Johnson of Chiefland has been chosen as a Farm Credit of North Florida scholarship recipient. He will receive $1,000 to aid in his 2009 studies.

Johnson, the son of Chad “Cracker” and Angela Johnson is a senior at Chiefland High School. After graduating at the end of this month, Johnson plans to attend Santa Fe Community College and then transfer to the University of Florida to pursue a degree in entomology with a minor in biotechnology.

The School Board Consent Agenda has been changed to more accurately reflect school district personnel changes. It now states “Employment Status Changes” instead of “Resignations.”

The change came after the last board meeting two weeks ago when more than seventy members of the public attended to protest the dismissal of 21 veteran teachers because of budgetary cuts.

During the April 7 meeting, questions arose regarding the Consent Agenda’s language.
