Registration is now open for the Oct. 23 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 17.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for first year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent standards.

   The first School Health Advisory Council and Wellness meeting for the 2010-2011 school year will take place at 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the School Board of Levy County board room, located at 480 Marshburn Drive in Bronson.

   The meeting is open to the public, and the School Health Advisory Council and District Wellness Team are always looking for new participants.

   The purpose of the meeting will be to review the current Wellness Plan, Safe and Drug Free Schools Programs, and Health policies.

 Tarmac America, in partnership with the Levy County Schools Foundation, awarded science scholarships to graduates from the Class of 2010 at four area high schools, selecting students who demonstrated a proficiency in math and science coursework. This is the third consecutive year that Tarmac has awarded $500 college scholarships to graduates from Levy County high schools.

n College of Central Florida offering computer courses

The College of Central Florida Levy Center is offering two courses to help computer users keep their machines in top condition.

First, the school is holding a Computer Repair and Troubleshooting course, scheduled for Aug. 6 and Aug. 13. Class time is slated to be 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to disassemble, configure and assemble the basic computer; and how to install the Windows Operating System. They also will learn about computer maintenance, upgrade and repair.
