 During his closing remarks at Tuesday's School Board of Levy County meeting, Superintendent Bob Hastings voiced his support for changing the state's class-size amendment.

Hastings said that there was "no way" the district could meet the amendment's requirements this year, which means the state could impose penalties that could total in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

"There's no way we're going to meet it 100 percent," Hastings said. "One size does not fit all."

The School Board of Levy County unanimously voted on Tuesday to change the language of the school district’s contract with the Levy County Education Association, altering it so that automatic salary step increases for teachers and employees will now be negotiated annually.
Both sides argued their cases before the board during an impasse hearing at the School Board’s offices in Bronson. The decision alters an agreement that has been in place for 30 years in the school district.

Registration is now open for the Oct. 23 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 17.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for first year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent standards.

   The first School Health Advisory Council and Wellness meeting for the 2010-2011 school year will take place at 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the School Board of Levy County board room, located at 480 Marshburn Drive in Bronson.

   The meeting is open to the public, and the School Health Advisory Council and District Wellness Team are always looking for new participants.

   The purpose of the meeting will be to review the current Wellness Plan, Safe and Drug Free Schools Programs, and Health policies.
