  • STARS come out Saturday for students

    The 12th Annual STARS Gala, hosted by the Levy County Schools Foundation, will be held Saturday at Chiefland Elementary School, but this is much more than a gathering of the county's movers and shakers. The event's theme this year is Set Sail For Education: Port Levy,
    The event raises money for students to go on field trips, for teachers to help classes take on educational projects and for high school graduates to attend college.

  • Chiefland FFA chili cook-off, cake auction Friday

    The Chiefland FFA Alumni are having their 3rd Annual Homemade Chili Cook-Off on Friday, Feb. 3, at the Chiefland High School Ag. Building.  Cost is $15 per entry and this also includes the hot dog/chili meal.
    Check-in time for entrants is 4:45 p.m., with a minimum of one gallon of chili. Prizes will be awarded.  Hot dog/chili meals will be sold to the general public for $5, beginning at 5:30.  

  • CHS drops a letter

    The state Department of Education's grades for high schools are out and it's a mixed report for Levy County.
    The report card:
    • Bronson Middle/High School got a C, down from last year's B
    • Cedar Key High School got a C, down from last year's A
    • Chiefland got a B, down from last year's A, and
    • Williston High School got a B, up from a C.

  • Rotary gives gift of words

    The Chiefland Rotary Club gave every third grade student at Chiefland Elementary School and Cedar Key School free dictionaries
     

  • Teachers get awards for conservation

    The Levy Soil & Water Conservation District (LSWCD) recognized three Levy County School teachers on Dec. 6,  at the Levy County School Board meeting for “2011 Conservation Teacher of the Year”.  The LSWCD sent out applications at the beginning of the school year for those teachers interested in receiving funds of $1,000 toward a conservation project funds would be allocated for. The LSWCD received three applications with conservation programs that are being implemented in the classrooms everyday and choose to allocate funds to all three recipients.

  • Homeschoolers

    Tri-county Homeschoolers joined the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge Ranger for a day of photography and creating a nature journal. Cameras, printing of the photos, and the journals were supplied by the Refuge & their Friends group (talent was supplied by the students).

  • Barber dished it out for 40 years

    When Candy Barber started working as a substitute in the  Chiefland schools lunchroom she only wanted to have a job that allowed her to be home with her children, Royce and Janet, when they were not in school.
    On Jan. 4 Barber, who estimates she has served or overseen the serving of over 5 million meals, will retire from her post as coordinator of food service for the county's 13 schools. She is also president of the Florida School Nutrition Association.

  • 40 years of food

    Levy County Schools Foodservice Director Candy Barber, left, is presented a plaque honoring her 40 years of service by Schools Superintendent Bob Hastings on Monday. The presentation was at a retirement party put on by food service personnel at Chiefland Elementary School.  Barber, who is president of the Florida School Nutrition Association, is retiring Jan. 4

  • CHS band to compete in Kingdom of the Sun Marching Band Festival

    Eighteen marching bands from throughout the entire state of Florida converge at North Marion High School’s Stan Toole Memorial Stadium for an all-day event on this Saturday, Nov. 12.

  • Bronson Band qualifies for state

    The Bronson Middle/High School Band has qualified to participate in the Florida Marching Bands Coalition's Class 1A State Semifinals on Nov. 19 at H.B. Plant High School in Tampa. The FMBC has been hosting state competitions since 2000, according to its website.
