  • Rotary summer camp helps disabled children

    "Service Above Self" is the Rotary Club motto, and Chiefland Rotary Club members learned on March 19 about another place where they can serve by donating funds.

    Rotary Youth Camp is set to give some special children an enjoyable six days and five nights this summer during two separate sessions, said Leslie C. Smith, the camp's executive director. The 12 days of summer fun comes at a price.

    Marking its fourteenth summer this year, Rotary Youth Camp serves a particular type of child who is aged between 7 and 16 years old, Smith said.

  • Dixie Chamber hopes to revive Red Belly Day in 2009

    Kay McCallister of the Dixie County Chamber of Commerce said that although Red Belly Day has been cancelled for 2008, the event may happen in 2009.

    The previous 12 annual Red Belly Day festivals happened during the Memorial Day holiday.

    "We hope to continue it in the future," she noted in an e-mail.

  • Fanning Springs Chamber hears about nuclear plants

    FANNING SPRINGS - Rose Fagler, community relations manager with Progress Energy Florida, gave the Fanning Springs Chamber of Commerce an update on the two potential nuclear power generators, which may be proposed for building in southern Levy County.

    Fagler was the keynote speaker at the annual banquet on Feb. 12, held in the Lighthouse Restaurant. She spoke about the future electric transmission lines going south from Levy County through nine other counties. Those power lines must be in place when the generators begin producing electricity.

  • New credit union coming to town

    A new credit union is coming to Chiefland as part of the Suwannee Plaza Addition, south of Radio Shack, building owner Jim Bingham said.

    Suwannee Plaza Addition is the new development on the south side of Radio Shack. Radio Shack was added five years ago on the south side of Wal-Mart, which Bingham developed in conjunction with Wal-Mart about 12 years ago, he said.

    The most recent addition is 8,000 square feet, Bingham said.

  • State grant may affect development

    Bruce Day, planning director of the Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council, received unanimous consensus from the Chiefland City Commission to seek a $28,000 grant from the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) for improving the city's comprehensive plan and its Evaluation and Appraisal Report.

    New commercial development is the focus of this venture, Day said. Existing "Big Box" stores would not need to modify the external appearance of the structures if there were amendments to local development regulations, Day said.

  • Interim Bronson Chamber president wants to pay old debts

    BRONSON - The Bronson Chamber of Commerce is in a rebuilding phase following the exodus of immediate past president Bob Levesque, who is now considered to be "an inactive member" by the new leadership.

    Interim Chamber President Cameron Asbell said the first thing he wants to do is to "get things straightened out financially."

    Asbell said he accepted the position as interim president during the Christmas holiday.

    "I heard that we are $3,000 in debt," Asbell said. "He (Levesque) is supposed to give us a list of who we owe and what is owed."

  • Citizens will offer power line path input

    Rose Fagler, community relations manager with Progress Energy Florida, told the Chiefland City Commission about the utility company's efforts to add two nuclear reactors in southern Levy County.

    The land has been bought for the plant, she said during the Oct. 22 meeting. The company is looking for a one-mile wide corridor for transmission lines going south. The potentially affected counties will be Levy, Citrus, Lake, Marion, Sumter, Pasco, Hernando, Hillsborough, Polk and Pinellas, she said.
