  • Southern pine beetle assistance, privation program taking applications

    The Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services announced that the Florida Forest Service will be accepting applications for the Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Cost Share Program from June 14 through July 31 from eligible private non-industrial forest landowners who own at least five acres.

  • Farm Bureau to build "home" for FFA in Gainesville

    Florida Farm Bureau President John Hoblick has announced that the statewide organization will lead a bold partnership to build a new headquarters for the Florida FFA Association, according to a press release from the Farm Bureau. The facility will be constructed on Florida Farm Bureau’s campus in Gainesville.

  • FFA Alumni rodeo this weekend

    Local cowboys and cowgirls will be joining the Flying “G” Rodeo Company on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. to put on a show at Brookins Arena at Lotoma Ranch to raise money for the Chiefland FFA Alumni Chapter. 

  • Levy FFA members bring home awards

    The results are in for Florida FFA competitions and the Levy County Fair competition and the news is good for teams from Levy County. 

    The CHS Senior FFA livestock judging team, made up of Harold Tillis, Payton Parnell, Kinsey Denee' Ward and Emily Diane Smith, came in second in the 2013 Livestock CDE State Finals. Williston High School came in an No. 8 and Bronson rounded out the Top 10 performances by coming in No. 10. 
    The CHS Senior FFA also placed 10th in the 2013 State Poultry CDE.

  • Saying goodbye

    Chiefland Senior FFA member Tyler Bennett spends a moment with his hog that won Grand Champion Swine at the 2013 Suwannee River Fair Youth Livestock Show and Sale.

    His animal brought $13 per pound in the annual sale held on Wednesday, March 20.

  • Squeals of a champion

    Lacey Bennett, of Double Sink 4H, won 4th place overall in the Florida State Fair’s Swine Showmanship Junior Division Feb. 9. The State Fair, held in Tampa, closes its 12-day run on Sunday, Feb. 18.

  • State Fair opens today in Tampa

        The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida State Fair Authority are partnering to celebrate 500 years of agriculture at this year's Florida State Fair. The fair officially beings Thursday, Feb. 7, when Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and his fellow Cabinet members will "flip the switch" to illuminate the Midway in Tampa. 

  • FFA Alumni searching for chili champion

    Anyone who can make chili, including those who think they make the best chili are invited to compete in the Chiefland FFA Alumni 4th Annual Homemade Chili Cookoff on Friday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Chiefland High School Ag Building.

    The cookoff is a fundraiser for the Chiefland schools agriculture program.

  • Local teen’s business is blooming

    He may not have a driver’s license, but Matthew George does have a blossoming daylily business.
    The 15-year-old Trenton High School student is actively involved in FFA, sports and running his own business.
    “Matthew is learning about the real world at a young age,” said Steve Broker, Trenton FFA advisor. “He’s a very serious young man, who works hard and will do anything you ask him to.”
