  • POW: You needed to have hope

    It was just a couple of hours into the New Year in 1945 when Ray Knisley peeked out of a freezing foxhole after being awakened by the sound of gunshots.
    His unit, the 117th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mecz), had been dug in about 30 miles south of Strasbourg, Germany. There was snow on the ground, and in the light of a full moon he thought he saw a patrol coming in with German prisoners.  He hunkered back in to put on his boots and a jacket.

  • 2010 Holiday Shipping Dates for APOs/FPOs/DPOs

     The holiday season is right around the corner. Friends and families need to mail early to ensure delivery of holiday cards and packages by Dec. 25 to APO/FPO/DPO destination addresses.

  • Deadline Oct. 21 for retro-active stop loss pay

     Military members whose service was involuntarily extended, or whose retirement was suspended between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009, due to stop loss are entitled to retroactive payments of $500 for each month they were extended, according to Department of Defense officials. But the deadline to receive those benefits is rapidly drawing to a close. The deadline to apply for the benefits is Oct. 21.

     The Levy County Veterans Day parade will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m., in Chiefland.
