  • Honoring our vets

    Sgt. Pete Barnes, of Chiefland, right, a K-9 officer with the Levy County Sheriff's Office, is presented with the Officer of the Year award for American Legion Post No. 236 and AMVETS Post No. 444 by AMVETS State Veterans Service Officer Ivan Chubb.  Maj. Evan Sullivan, center, head of law enforcement for the sheriff's office, said Barnes is "a can-do guy." Chubb said, "You're the only body I know that everybody likes." Chubb said Barnes is also a military
    veteran.

  • Shriners honor one 'standing tall'

    Dixie Shrine Club President John Long presents Roz Boudreau of Chiefland and the VFW Post 5625 Ladies Auxiliary the Shriners Standing Tall Award for Outstanding Support of  Shriners Hospital for Children. Boudreau collected over $4,500 plus donated items, including crochet afghans and soft toys for the Tampa Shrine hospital during 2010.

    Memorial Day plans
    Ivan Chubb, who organizes the annual Memorial Day ceremonies in Cedar Key and Bronson, has announced plans for the events.
    Chubb informed the Levy County Commission that the Cedar Key ceremony will be held in the Cedar Key Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 29.
    The Bronson ceremony will be held at the city cemetery at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 30.
    Chubb said Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5625 in Chiefland would be presenting the colors at the ceremonies.

  • World War II veterans to meet March 10

     All World War II veterans are invited to attend the WWII Veterans meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10 at the new Bar-B-Q restaurant at the Carriage Inn Motel, Cross City.

    This is the third year the group has sent a donation to support the Soldiers Angels program. Thank you for your generosity.
