  • Hundreds of people involved in law enforcement, law and judicial fields gathered for the 2015 Annual W.O. Beauchamp Law Day, which was held on the banks of the Suwannee River.

    The annual event is like a "family reunion" for law enforcement at the city, county, state and federal level and for the prosecutors, judges and attorneys who usually do not have time to catch up with each other on the job.

  • On Wednesday, May 27, the Historical Society has planned a one day trip to the Florida State Archives and Library in Tallahassee.

    While at the Archives, the group will tour “behind the scenes” conducted by one of the Florida State Archivists.

    The tour will be conducted in the restricted stacks area of the Archives. In this area, researchers will learn more about the records the Archives collects and also be shown preservation methods and view little known record collections of interest available to local and family history researchers.

  • AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary 88 held its first community dog walk to benefit the Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, Inc.

    The walk started at Fort Fanning Historical Park in Fanning Springs where Guardian Angels had a booth, along with booths for concessions, T-shirts and bandanas and dog treats run by other volunteers.

    The four-mile walk started at Fort Fanning and carried over on to the Nature Coast State Trail. 

  • Have you been diagnosed as a diabetic? Nationwide, about 11 million older adults have diabetes. Thousands of new cases are reported each year and millions more have it and don’t know it. Diabetes is a lifelong health condition but if individuals with the condition know how to manage it, they can live successfully without complications.

  • The Suwannee Valley Players is holding auditions for “The Addams Family Musical” based on the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, and characters created by Charles Addams.

    The show dates are Oct. 16-18, 23-25, 30-31 and Nov. 1.

    Auditions will be at the Chief Theater, 25 E. Park Ave. Chiefland on Tuesday, June 8, 7-9 p.m.; Saturday, June 13, 4-6 p.m. and Saturday, June 20, 2-4 p.m.

  • “Campers in the Kitchen” is scheduled for the week of June 22. Campers will learn basic food preparation skills, food safety, nutrition and more. Crafts and physical activity will also be a part of the program. Deadline for this camp is Monday, June 8 with a minimum of 10 campers required.

  • Food distribution

    The Food for Life food distribution is on the second and fourth Saturday of the month starting at 10 a.m. at the Chiefland First United Methodist Church with a suggested donation of $3.50.

    Turning Point lasagna dinner

    Turning Point Ministry is having a lasagna dinner tonight (Thursday, May 14) from 5-7 p.m. at the church.

    The menu includes lasagna, salad bar, bread, drink and dessert. A donation of $8 is suggested.

  • The Horseshoe Beach Library Corporation announced the election of new officers. Zinnette Green is president, Lindy Mather is vice president, Natalie Wilson is secretary and Priscilla Roberts is treasurer. Sara Beth Stribling and Elsie Hicks are directors. The new board replaces President Jeanne Jones and Secretary/Treasurer Laura Wigglesworth.

    World War II Veterans meet

       World War II Veterans and Proud of It will meet  at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, in Fanning Springs at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Come, bring your spouse, care giver or friend.

  • Fanning Springs held its first-ever movie night in the park at the Fort Fanning Historical Park. The event featured fingerprinting for children at 6:30 and the movie, Big Hero Six, started around dark. 

    “I felt like it went extremely well,” said Mayor Trip Lancaster, who estimated there were 400 to 500 in attendance. He said it was a fun night and all the children were playing in the park and then sat down and enjoyed the film.

    Another movie night is being planned for sometime in August before school starts.
