  • Food distribution

    The Food for Life food distribution is on the second and fourth Saturday of the month starting at 10 a.m. at the Chiefland First United Methodist Church with a suggested donation of $3.50.

    VBS Bronson Road Church

    Bronson Road Church will hold vacation Bible school from 6-8:30 p.m. June 22-25.

    The church is located at 1380 NE 80th Ave., Newberry.

  • June 14 is Flag Day and the American Legion Post 236 in Bronson will be honoring our national emblem. The public is welcome to attend.  

       The Sons of the American Legion are holding a poker run and the Post is putting on a fish fry.

       There will also be a flag retirement ceremony whereby worn out flags will be destroyed according to tradition.

    The fish fry will begin at 4 p.m. followed by the flag ceremony.  

    The Legion is also holding a membership drive for the Legion, Auxiliary, Sons and Riders.

    WWII vets meet in Trenton

       WW II Veterans and Proud of It will meet Thursday, June 11 in Trenton at Cherry's Rest. Next meeting will be in September as we do not meet during the summer. Please come, bring your spouse, caregiver or friend.  So glad to see all of you that were there this month. Rod Hooten was out of the nursing home to visit with us, his good friends, Ruby Duke and her son Richard brought him. Any questions, please call Virginia Lewis at 352-528-2310.

  • Florida Watermelon Queen Kelli Wilder, returning Chiefland Watermelon Queen Katelyn Ressler, newly crowned Chiefland Watermelon Queen Hailey Bason, first runner up Sarah Gore and Alabama Watermelon Queen Lenzey Morris.

    Bason was crowned during the 61st Annual Watermelon Festival on Saturday, June 6.

       Graduation ceremonies for students at Levy Learning Academy will be Thursday, June 4 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the old Bronson High School, beding the Levy County Courthouse.

  • Chiefland softball coach Wayne Weatherford sat down with the team early in the season and told them the news.

    He had renal cell carcinoma - a tumor on his kidney - and he might not be able to see them through the whole season.

    “We were pretty devastated. We didn’t expect something like that to happen,” Emily Hallman, catcher for the team, said.

    Weatherford got an original surgery date that would fall on the same day as the state championship game and he knew there was a good chance, his girls would be playing.

  • The Chiefland Watermelon Festival, hosted by the Chiefland Women’s Club, is more than just another festival to one of its coordinators. And she puts in the time to show it.

    “It’s tradition and supporting what watermelon has done for our community,” said Karen Tillis who coordinates sponsorships, media and vendors for the event. She’s also the principal at Old Town Elementary School.

    Tillis has been working with the club to put on the festival for six or seven years with the exception of last year when her son was graduating.

  • The Friends of the Luther Callaway Public Library will have its semi-annual Book Sale June 6 along with the Chiefland Watermelon Festival.

     Hard cover books are $1 and papeback books are 50 cents or you can fill a bag for $6.  There are also DVD’s, audio books, children’s books, cook books, fiction and non-fiction books.  The sale is in the octagon building behind the police station between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Grand opening for health foods store

       The Grand Opening of Health Foods and Wellness, a new business at 105 E. Rodgers Blvd., in Chiefland (next to Chiefland Farm Supply) will be celebrated on May 28. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon. The owner, Joann Conway, is surveying residents to find out what healthy foods and supplements they would like to see on the shelves.
