  • Every weekday, Kay Maxwell wakes up at 3 in the morning, showers, has her coffee and makes her way to the cafeteria at Chiefland Elementary School.

    In front of her is the seemingly monumental task of feeding hundreds of hungry school kids.

    Maxwell along with her team of nine other workers perform the task day after day, week after week, month after month.

    Maxwell has been at it for 19 years now and still hasn't lost any enthusiasm.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Joe P. Ruth of Old Town announce the engagement of their daughter, Alicia Blanche to Cecil "Edward" Alford Jr. of Chiefland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Alford of Cedar Key.

    The bride-elect is a 1996 graduate of Dixie County High School and is a registered nurse. She is employed by the Orthopaedic Surgery Center in Gainesville.

    The future groom is a 1996 graduate of Cedar Key High School and is employed by Central Florida Electric Co-op in Chiefland.

    A summer wedding is being planned.

    Amanda and Shane Garrett of Trenton announce the birth of a son Zackery Adma Garrett, born March 4, 2008.

    The baby weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces.

    Grandparents are Angie and the late Clinton Garrett of Fanning Springs, Shirley and Bobby Stickle of Trenton and Suzie and Mike Johnson of South Carolina.

    The baby has an older brother Dalton.

    Gulledge

    Tasha and John Gulledge of Chiefland announce the birth of a son Payton Allan Gulledge, born Dec. 19, 2007 at North Florida Regional.

    The baby weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19.5 inches long.

  • Danny Jo Jenkins and Trina Jenkins announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Danielle LaShane Jenkins to Milford Gordon (M.G) Ridgeway, son of Doyle and Diane Ridgeway on Saturday, April 5 at four o'clock in the afternoon at the Woodmen of the World, State Road 26 in Trenton.

  • Mr. and Mrs. James Burkett of Trenton announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Meghan Adayr Burkett of Chiefland to Jay Bolton of Chiefland.

    The bride-elect graduated from Trenton High School and attended Central Florida Community College. She is employed by Fernwood Flowers and Gifts.

    The future groom graduated from Bronson High School and Central Florida Community College (Ocala) where he received a degree in law enforcement. He is employed with the Chiefland Police Department as a K-9 officer.

    Poets Meeting

    Suwannee River Poets will meet March 27 at 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 6591 N. W. 140th St., Chiefland.

    Meetings are always the last Thursday night of each month. Visitors and new members are welcomed.

    Health Meeting

    The Levy County Health Department met Jan. 31 with 45 community members and agencies to discuss health issues in Levy County.

  • The Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges open house and Friends annual meeting was recently held at the Lower Suwannee Refuge's headquarters.

    Manager of the Refuges, John Kasbohm kicked off the day by welcoming the Friends and visitors of the refuge.

    Jay Bushnell, president of the Friends of the refuges announced many projects and new developments that are in the works or coming soon. Among those mentioned is the new Forestry Office that now finally furnishes adequate space at the refuge.

    The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 63, Cross City will have nominations for officers at its March 6 meeting. All members are encouraged to attend,

    Chicken Dinner

    Chiefland Masonic Lodge, Brown No. 51 will hold a chicken and rice dinner March 7 at noon. A $5 donation is requested. Meals are available for pick up or delivery.
