    Genealogy & History Society program on free sources

    The Genealogy & History Society of Levy County will meet at 2 p.m. at the Levy County Quilt Museum. This month's program will be on sources for free online genealogy presented by Bonnie Hill, a member of the society. All members are encouraged to attend and visitors are welcome.

  • The Partners in Prevention of Substance Abuse (PIPSA)  Faith-Based Coalition of Levy County is sponsoring its 4th Annual Hope in the Park Hope fest on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    The event will be held at Edie Buie Park in Chiefland, and includes fun, games and free hamburgers and hotdogs.

  • Dozens of people stood on street corners and sidewalks in Chiefland Sunday holding up signs calling for an end to abortion.

    The demonstrators, from various local churches, were participating in Life Chain, a national event meant to increase awareness about abortion and its alternatives.

    Matthew Kidd, 16, Chiefland, stood in front of Chiefland High School holding a sign that read, “Abortion kills children.”

    “We think abortion is wrong.  This is just one of the ways we tell the community,” he said.

  • The Levy County 4-H clubs kicked off the official beginning of their year with an Annual Roundup this past Saturday at the IFAS Extension office in Bronson.  The clubs showed potential members the benefits of joining 4-H, which is celebrating its 100th year in Florida, by holding shooting and archery exhibitions, as well as a barbecue chicken cook-off for kids. Albert Fuller, extension director for 4-H in Levy County, said the Annual roundup was a big recruitment tool for the local clubs, averaging about 100 to 150 enrollments every year. &ldquo

  • First Christian Church Yard Sale First Christian Church of Chiefland will hold a yard sale to benefit their Christmas Stocking Fund on Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at 6591 N. W. 140th St. (CR346).  Each year our church delivers over 200 hand-made Christmas stockings filled with toys, games and other goodies to Partnership for Stronger Families for foster children in our area.  All funds from the yard sale will be for this purpose.

  • In a nutshell, you are guaranteed a day of fun this Saturday when Heritage Park is lined with vendors, entertainment and thousands of visitors at the 21st Annual Central Florida Peanut Festival. Originally a project of the Williston Woman’s Club to salute the local peanut industry, the Festival is now sponsored by the Williston Area Chamber of Commerce as its signature event.  For nearly a year, Chamber members have planned how to make this year’s celebration bigger and better. The day kicks off at 9 a.m.

  • Friday Old Town Methodist yard sale, lunch Old Town United Methodist Women will hold their fall Yard & Bake Sale on Friday October 2nd from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday October 3rd from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Methodist Men will again serve hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings for the hungry shoppers.   • The Haven Hospice Alliance will host the 9th Annual Styles for Life Fashion Show, a benefit for Haven Hospice. This year’s theme is “Pearls at the Paramount.” Radio station KTK’s Storm Roberts returns as emcee of the event, which features local fashions by Coldwater Creek, Belk, Rapid City Clothiers (RCC Western Stores) and the Haven Hospice Attic.  The event will also feature special guest models, door prizes and a silent auction, as well as a cash wine bar.  The event is Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at Paramount Plaza, 2900 SW 13th St.
