  • Flashlight beams revealed the interior walls of the Old Gilchrist County Jail in Trenton to be alive with decay.  Layers of lead paint flaked from their surface, giving them the appearance of matted fur, occasionally punctuated by the bodies and spindly legs of spiders. If the walls could have spoken, they would have whispered the words: Get out.

    In one of the dark cells on the second floor of the building, three women gathered on the floor around small electronic devices, hoping to see them light up in response to questions they were asking.  

  • Chiefland Elementary School kindergartners celebrated Earth Day with a pine tree planting and more.  Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge Forester Daniel Barrand partnered with Andrews State Nursery - Division of Forestry, which donated nearly 200 pine seedlings for the youngsters.   • Every 15 seconds a child dies because of the lack of clean water. The Chad Reed Memorial Well will provide clean water to over 1,000 children for the next 20 years.

    In honor of fallen Dixie County Sheriff’s Captain Chad Reed, a 5K Run/Walk and BBQ fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Dixie County High School at 16077 S.E. U.S. Highway 19, in the heart of Cross City.

    Capt. Reed was killed in the line of duty, after a lifetime of service in Emergency Services in Dixie and Taylor Counties.

    Chamber ribbon cutting at

    The Greater Area Chiefland Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting for one of its newest members Star Computers II at noon. The public is invited to welcome Star Computers II. The business is located at 118 Rodgers Blvd.

    These programs use books and music to present the young children with the concept that books, reading, and libraries are fun and enjoyed at all ages.  The programs last 30 minutes.

    is collecting donations for the Childrens Miracle Network

    until June 20.

    A $1 donation will get you entered in a raffle

     to win a quilt donated by

    the Log Cabin Quilters.

    On Mother’s Day, Sunday,

    moms can bring their babies to the store and have a rocking chair portrait taken.  

    The photos will cost $1.

    Money collected will benefit babies at Shands.

  • Current Problems was asked by the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail Working Group and the Suwannee River Water Management District to coordinate a cleanup of the of the Suwannee River from the Georgia line to the Gulf of Mexico.

    The cleanup will consist of many small cleanups all along the river during a three-month window from September through November.   Volunteers are needed.

  •    Hello, I am Casper, a rescued Lab. I can relax and sleep well, knowing that the Dixie County Humane Society rescue volunteers are working hard to take care of me. They feed me, house me, and pay my vet bills until I find my new home

    Cattlemen and Landowners Association meeting

    The Levy County Cattlemen and Landowners Association is having its spring meeting on Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. The location is Don Quincy’s home on the Suwannee River.
