  • Haven Hospice Alliance hosts fashion show benefit

    The Haven Hospice Alliance will host the 9th Annual Styles for Life Fashion Show, a benefit for Haven Hospice. This year’s theme is “Pearls at the Paramount.” Radio station KTK’s Storm Roberts returns as emcee of the event, which features local fashions by Coldwater Creek, Belk, Rapid City Clothiers (RCC Western Stores) and the Haven Hospice Attic.  The event will also feature special guest models, door prizes and a silent auction, as well as a cash wine bar.  The event is Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at Paramount Plaza, 2900 SW 13th St.

  • Levy County's walk on the wild side

    A lot of little girls go to bed and dream of ponies.  But not Patricia Engesser.  Her childhood dreams were filled with snarling tigers.  And she didn’t wake up screaming.

    “I always wanted a tiger,” Engesser said.  “So, I married a guy with one.”

    Engesser and her husband, Robert, have been married about 26 years and own The Zoo AKA Jungle Safari between Chiefland and Trenton.

    It is one of six licensed wild animal facilities in Levy County.

    The Jamerson-Sheffield Post 91, American Legion will have its regular membership donation dinner and meeting starting at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and the membership meeting starting after the dinner. As always it is a joint meeting with the  Ladies Auxiliary of the Post. Please plan to attend to keep the organization moving forward. All veterans are welcome to attend.

  • VFW honors POWs and MIAs

    In the Jim Sensbach Memorial Hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5625 stands a single round table. It’s a symbol of unending concern on the part of mothers who couldn’t sleep at night and fathers who had to act strong when they sent their children to war.

    It’s draped with a white tablecloth to remind Americans of the purity of the soldier’s intent.

    Empty chairs await the soldiers’ return, and slices of lemon on plates hint at the bitterness suffered by those gone missing or taken prisoner.

  • Cancer scare leaves strong impression

    About eight months ago, 45-year-old Polly “P.J.” Jensen noticed a lump under her left arm.

    She was unable to afford health insurance and ineligible for Medicaid.  

    “So I kind of set it aside at the time – something I should have never done,” P.J. said. “Something every women should never do.”

    After a while, the mild discomfort became painful tenderness. “It got to the point that I couldn’t wear anything tight around that area.”

    She finally went to the doctor early this month.

  • Manatee to celebrate Public Lands Day

    The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Manatee Springs State Park, along with The Friends of Manatee/Fanning Springs Parks, Inc. will host the Suwannee River clean-up effort in support of the 16th Annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009.

  • Half as many bikers--more money

    Nearly 150 motorcycles turned out for this year’s Ride to Provide through 60 scenic miles of Levy County. The Ride benefits the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens, a Work Activity and Training Center located in Otter Creek.

    The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for LARC, and this year brought in approximately $11,500, topping 2008’s success of $10,000.

  • Log Cabin Quilters

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Levy County Quilt Museum.  We are starting to put things outside for a yard sale. We have so much that has been brought in and we do need the space, as we will soon be getting ready for the Quilt Show.  Also it is almost time to be thinking about the State Fair and if you have anything that you want to be put it, we will soon be ready to do the applications.

  • Military

    Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Lawrence A. Mayo graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

    He is the son of Patricia Richerson of S.E. 141st Ave., Morriston, and brother of Leo Mayo of Fountain St., Springfield, Mass.

    The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
