    Levy County will have less stray and feral cats breeding on its streets thanks to a local Trap-Neuter-Return program.

    On Thursday, Oct. 29, members of Sheltering Hands Inc., an organization that rescues and finds homes for pets in Marion and Levy Counties, received about 39 feral cats needing to be spayed or neutered.

  • Residents lose for good cause, donate 488 pounds to Bronson church

    A local Levy County group joined the fight against two global epidemics — hunger and obesity — by participating in the "Lose For Good" campaign. 

    As local Weight Watchers members lose weight, they’ve also been collecting food to donate to Bronson United Methodist Church to help their neighbors in need. Within seven weeks, the group lost 854.6 pounds, and collected 488 pounds of food.

  • NAACP holds annual banquet

    O.C. Graham was once like the rest of us. He liked to party, said Aljoseph Carnegie, president of the Tri-County Branch of the NAACP at its 19th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at Tommy Usher Community Center in Chiefland on Oct. 24.

    “He liked to party until God took him in,” Carnegie, a Raleigh resident, said. “And he was blind, really blind, until God restored his sight.”

  • Caregivers can learn with pampering seminar, webinar

    Taking care of someone you love can be a tough job. It's hard to find time for yourself.

    Knowing what a hard job caregivers have, a group of organizations have come together to give you a little "Me Time."

    A caregiver day of pampering is planned for Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Gilchrist Women's Club from 9 a.m. to 3  p.m. Dr. Rafael Cott, medical director for Gentiva Home Care, will be the guest speaker. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.

    Soup 'n' sandwich at Turning Point

    Turning Point Ministry  will host a Soup and Sandwich Supper for $5 per person on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

    Dunnellon Library friends book sale

    The Friends of the Dunnellon Public Library Book Store will have a storewide sale at the store inside the library located at 20351 Robinson Road (behind Sweetbay) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

    The Friends are offering everyday low prices of $2 for hardcovers; $1 for large paperbacks and .50 for paperbacks.  This week all books big and small, fiction and non-fiction will be 50 cents each.  Inventory changes daily depending on donations.

  • Equestrian Charity Auction

    Tomorrow’s Equestrian Center, based in Levy County, will hold its fourth annual charity auction and BBQ on Saturday, Nov. 14 beginning at 4 p.m.

    The event will be held at Southern Auction Marketing Services, at 15991 Hwy 27 Alt., just west of Williston on the north side of the road.

    The barbeque begins at 4 p.m. and costs $5 per plate.  Takeout is available.  The Bar-B-Q includes two pieces of chicken, Cole slaw, beans and bread.

  • Cantata for veterans has two performances

    Two performances of the cantata, “Prayer for America” are scheduled to honor veterans. The Old Town United Methodist Church choir will present “Prayer for America” as its third annual Veterans Day remembrance. The first performance will be on Saturday night, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Dixie Cultural Center (the “old” Old Town School at the corner of County Road 349 South and State Road 55A.) The performance is open to the public and veterans and their families.

  • Refuge Week seeks to enlighten visitors

    The sunlight strained at the edges between clusters of bromeliad-laden tupelo trees, water oaks and cabbage palms.  

    Thin shafts of light breaking through the canopy revealed flitting birds and clouds of mosquitoes hovering over black water dotted with the heart-shaped leaves of cow lilies.

    Snakes, in search of prey, slithered in and out of the murk below, and fiddler crabs scurried over rocks and tiny islands of gnarled tree roots.
