    Take a pet home for holidays

    Dixie County Humane Society is participating in the national “Foster A Lonely Pet For the Holidays” pet fostering program starting today and having a foster/adoption event on Sunday, Dec. 6 at Walmart in Chiefland.

    Across the country, over 13,000 pet rescue organizations are trying to empty their kennels for Christmas, encouraging members of the public to invite a pet home for the holidays.

  • Festival of Lights coming soon

    Excitement is building as time draws near for the 21st annual Festival of Lights and Christmas Boat Parade.  Fort Fanning Park will come alive on Saturday, Dec. 12, with many types of art and crafts on display and a wide variety of foods to choose from   Santa Claus is busy getting ready for all the children to visit him, receive a toy and have their pictures taken with him too.

  • Quilt show in time for Thanksgiving

    The Levy County Quilt Museum will hold its 26th annual quilt show starting on Nov. 26.

    Winnelle Horne, the museums director and co-founder, said the event would run for 10 days and feature over 100 quilts made by the Log Cabin Quilters. About 2/3 of the quilts are hand made, and people wishing to purchase a quilt can expect to pay anywhere from $150 to several hundred dollars.

    There’s no charge to attend the show, she said, and food will be available. The last Saturday of the event, Dec. 5, will have music and a chicken and dumpling dinner.

  • Bikers unite to spread Christmas cheer

    The 5th Annual Nature Coast Toys for Tots Ride raised $16,631 to be used to purchase toys for children in the tri-county area of Levy, Dixie and Gilchrist counties.

    Of that amount, $10,270 was cleared on the raffle of a new Toys for Tots bike built by Gulf Coast Sledz, after the bills were paid for building it. Gulf Coast Sledz donated the 400 hours of build time for the bike valued at $32.000.

  • Airheads invade Levy for Suwannee Tech Day

    Airheads from all over the state converged on a 45-acre farm located between Cedar Key and Chiefland recently for the Second Annual Suwannee River Tech Day and Camp.

    The international Airheads Beemer Club is for riders who own BMW bikes with air-cooled engines. Most anything that happens with an Airhead Beemer can be repaired on the side of the road with the tool kit that BMW provides — with the right knowledge, of course.

    That’s why the Airheads motto is “Simple by Choice.”

    • Old Town Methodist hosts cookie walk and Christmas sale

    The Old Town United Methodist Women and the Bible Study Class are having their annual cookie walk and Christmas sale on Saturday, Dec. 5 in the fellowship hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A cookie walk is tables of homemade cookies ready for you to choose from.

        You purchase the size tin you wish to fill and pick from among the decorative and special dietetic cookies. Plus there will be many beautiful and useful Christmas items.

     book sale

    The Friends of the Dunnellon Public Library Book Store will have a storewide sale at the store inside the library located at 20351 Robinson Road (behind Sweetbay) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

    The Friends are offering everyday low prices of $2 for hardcovers; $1 for large paperbacks and .50 for paperbacks.  This week all books big and small, fiction and non-fiction will be 50 cents each.  Inventory changes daily depending on donations.
