    The Cannon-Janney Reunion will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning at 9 a.m. at Manatee Springs State Park.
    You and your family are invited. Participants are asked to bring family pictures, and a favorite dish or dessert. Attendees will also need to bring beverages and lawn chairs for their comfort.

  • American Legion helping Fisher House for vets' families

       The Jefferson-Sheffield American Legion Auxiliary No. 91 in Trenton is making an effort to support by fundraising, the Gainesville Fisher House.
       The Gainesville Fisher House Foundation is about supporting families of wounded or injured service men and women. They help with housing for families while they are in the VA Hospital undergoing rehabilitation or treatment. Their website is www.fisherhouse.org in case someone in not familiar with it.

  • Reunion

    The Annual  Gulf Hammock Homecoming and Smallwood Reunion will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning at 10 a.m. at Henry Beck Park in Gulf Hammock.
    Lunch will be at 1 p.m. Plates, utensils, cups, tea, and ice will be furnished. Those participating are asked to please bring a covered dish and chairs. Friends, relatives, residents, and former residents of Gulf Hammock are invited.

  • 4-H Sewing Camp keeps soldiers cool

    The 2009-2010 Levy County 4-H Sewing campers completed a community service project as part of the camps. They made necktie coolers for our soldiers. When soaked in cold water these necktie coolers expand and assist with keeping our soldiers cool.  
    And as it happens, one of the fiscal assistants at the University of Florida IFAS Family Nutrition Program is married to a soldier. He happened to be home on leave as the summer was ending and has agreed to accept the coolers and take them back to the soldiers.

  • Log Cabin Quilters

    The Log Cabin Quilters met Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Levy County Quilt Museum. It was a great day.  We had a Church group over from Hawthorne to come by and visit.  Some we hadn’t seen in several years.  
    Sometimes they come to see if I’m still here and I tell them my Lord hasn’t come yet so I’m still here.

  • Camp Safe Haven helps children cope with loss

    Haven Hospice’s Healing Hearts program hosted eight children at Camp Safe Haven on July 17 at First Baptist Church in Williston. The day camp, designed for children ages 6 to 12 who have experienced the loss of a loved one, provides an opportunity to have fun with their peers as well as sharing experiences.

  • Bessie Cornelia “Nelia” Dempsey Carhop

    Bessie Cornelia “Nelia” Dempsey, 62, of Steinhatchee, died at home on Sunday, March 21, 2010.  Born in Lake Park, Ga., Mrs. Dempsey moved, as a child to Live Oak.  

    She worked at A&W Drive-in as a carhop for 15 years before joining Oxidental Chemical.  Retiring from Oxidental in 1990, she moved to Steinhatchee to fulfill her lifelong dream of hunting and fishing and made many, many friends, which became her extended family.
