  • Doomsday: 79 A.D.

In the year 79 A.D. a mountain named Vesuvius, in southwestern Italy, literally blew its top, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.  At the time of the eruption, Pompeii was a thriving commercial port at the mouth of the Sarno River.  It was a destination for wealthy Roman citizens who often vacationed there, being a city of considerable size with numerous attractions such as its own amphitheater, complete with gladiatorial school.

  • A mighty fortress is our God

Martin Luther was born in an earthen floored cottage to poor German peasants on a chilly November eve.  As a child, Martin developed a love for music and often went about doing his chores while singing at the top of his voice.  He attracted the attention of the neighborhood boys and after teaching them to sing in parts: soprano, tenor, alto, and bass, Martin would lead them to neighboring towns where they would sing at cottage doors in return for bread or a good hot sausage cake.

Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
    Isaiah 40:3

Many years ago, the author Robert Louis Stevenson was stricken with a fatal illness.  He sought rest and quiet in a favorable climate and chose a faraway island in the Pacific Ocean.  He soon found conditions to be less than ideal there, for the native chiefs were constantly at war with each other.

  • Prayer bound

Hands clasp last Thursday in front of Chiefland’s City Hall as part of National Prayer Day.

Several dozen people turned out to offer individual prayers for the nation's leaders and the military as they circled the flagpole at Chiefland City Hall.

  • Be prepared

There once were two boys who we will call Tom and Tad.  They had a grandfather who did his level best to help them prepare for the future.  Gramp taught them many things, one of which was to begin early preparing for retirement.  He took them to New York City, toured the stock market on Wall Street and taught them about such things as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.  At seven years old the boys could recite the formula for becoming a millionaire.
